Help with Cab Lights!!!
Help with Cab Lights!!!
I love my first gen cab lights but I just bought clear lights for the rest of the truck (clear lens with colored LED) and I'm having a hard time finding out if they make clear lenses for the first gen cab lights anywhere. If not what would be the best clear cab lights to go with or would it matter. Does anyone have any suggestions or ones that they like. I hate to get rid of my first gen cab lights but It's not going to look right with the rest of the truck having clear lenses and the cab ones not. let me know what you think thanks!!
Sorry, I have not seen any. Maybe look for some early Dodge Dakotas of the same vintage. The aftermarket doesn't make much for Dodge trucks prior to 94. They must either think we are all tight wads or all own clunkers.

Thank you for the information and thanks wannadiesel and onemoparnut for the link I saw that truck when I was looking on the web for clear lights. I really appreciate it. Trebor your right there isn't much for our trucks as far as after market but that just makes us more inventive then the other guys who just can point and click to get the accessories they want. I'll come up with an alternative and I'll post the results
Jim's lights are nice - I did the upgrade on my truck, but one bit of warning, these lights tend to get condensation in them easily. I personally think its because they are made to be mounted vertically so the screw holes don't hold any water. Mounting them on the cab the holes hold water when it rains and it eventually leaks inside. I've had to replace all of mine over the past year.

Wow,
Did you get the same lights?
I think it is an odd design to have the screw at the bottom of a well where it can retain water, I think it would be a good idea once you have them installed to fill the hole using silicone to seal it off, if you ever need to remove the lamp the silicone could be punctured easily using a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws.
These lamps were designed to be mounted on the top of School Busses.

Grote lamps are hermetically sealed and will work submerged without leaking unless they are either defective or they are overtightened.
I had a few of them that got moisture inside of them and I showed them to my friend at BPS Truck Parts and he said I will get you some replacements because Grote has a lifetime warranty, you can return them to any dealer that carries them and they will replace them, I also bought some extras now have a complete spare set in my garage.
The trick to installing them is to use the correct stainless steel screws and drill the proper size pilot hole and when you tighten them down, go only until the foam gasket bulges about 1/2 its thickness equally on both sides and then stop, this will ensure the hole for the wire is sealed.
I have removed a lamp to replace it after about 2 years and the gasket is still perfectly sealed over the hole and had to be peeled off. I think the seal should last the life of the lamp unless it has been removed several times or had dried out.
Hum,
I am wondering if you contacted Grote if they would sell a handful of the base gaskets for replacements.
Also occasionally I will remove all of my lamps and polish them using a good Polycarbonate Scratch Remover and Polish to keep them clear and new looking.
I think the reason there might not be any aftermarket lamps with clear lens yet is because these lamps have to be DOT approved because of their application. maybe..
