Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone would have any advice on my current problem. My 91 Dodge currently does not have any running lights, I do have headlights hi & low beams. But I do not have any of my marker lights all the way around the truck including tailights. I also do not have any dash lights. All the turn signals work and so do break lights so I know that all of them work. So could my problem be the switch itself?

 

I had a bad switch and left me with no headlights I could hold the high beam on and have high beams it was easy to fix only $18.00 or so at a local parts store also I had a problem with running lights tail lights but that was due to a hot wire from my running board lights grounding on the frame ( work the previous owner did) that kept making the fuse blow did you check the fuses and if blown mabye theres ashort somewhere

 

no, i checked the fuses and all of them are okay.

 

If the fuses are good I'd throw a headlight switch at it.

 

Also have someone watch the taillight and jiggle the HL SW or reach under the dash and jiggle the wires mabye to be sure but as wanna said just put one in cheap enough and easy

 

Also, while you have the dash apart, install a relay on the tail light circuit. This takes the load of the extra dually/ trailer lights off the switch, and helps it last. I have done this on 4 trucks, and so far, no more HL switch troubles. I even installed a switch on one so I could flash my clearance lights like the big rigs

would it say anything about the truck if I told you the cab and frame had around 400,000mi on it alot of it pulling a trailer?

 

Nathan, the headlight swithces on the first gens are notourious for going bad...... in three years i have replaced three of them on two trucks......

If you tow a lot, the relay mentioned above will take a lot of the load off the switch. there is no real trick to replacing it, just be gentle with the plastic when you pull the dash. there are screws along the top and sometimes one right above the radio. the bottom edge "clips " into place.
then remove the headlight switch ****( parts store can show you how if you havent done it before)
remove/replace switch , test function and put it all back together...nothing to it, about a 20 minute job, taking your time..........
