Head gasket popped

I got a call from dad today at work telling me the 93 puked a bunch of coolant out the overfill bottle. First thoughts, head gasket. Just got in from looking at it, saw a little flake of orange floating on top of the coolant, looks like part of the sealing traces around the coolant passages. Get it filled back up all the way with coolant and sure enough its blowing bubbles.

Needs a head gasket now, thinking about going standard thickness marine gasket. I'll have to search for the part numbers, but if someone has them handy that would be great.

O-rings are a posibility, studs also. Should I stick a new head on the deck and be done with it, keep my current head and rebuild, o-ring it at my liesure for another engine in the future, maybe near future.

At the vary least you need a head gasket,... and while you there you might as well put the heavy valve spring and some new valve seals and at least some vary mild porting(port, casting faw clean up!)

Heavy valve springs are definate, valve job also. O-rings are possible, but I want to try and spend less than a $1000 on this operation.

I'd ask again in the preformance section. My understanding is O-ringing isn't needed til you push around 50PSI boost, and that it's not the thing to do til you need it.

Is 40 psi close enough? Lets just say that there are plans for future enhancements and its something I can do at home if I want to setup the mill for it.

40 psi is definately close enough if you're looking for a reason I never thought I'd need my head done but I'm up to almost 45 psi with a 56mm wheel I can't imagine where the Stage 4 is going to take me. Do it while you have an easy chance!

Thanks, I managed to find them later in the morning. Everything I need is ordered, should be here monday. Head gasket, HD valve springs and I'm also upgrading to a piston lift pump while I'm there.

I think all the gaskets that cummins makes are marine gaskets now. I read that on other topic.

If have the link to that topic I'd love to see it. I know stock 24v gaskets are pretty light compared to a marine version.

Any way, a friend of mine brought his leak tester over last night and we couldn't find a thing. So we decided to retorque to head and see what happens. The gasket has been compromised, but it holding for now, good for right now, because I don't have a good place to tear it down just yet, punkins have invaded the garage and the barn is just a mess right now. This way I can schedule it to when we're not so busy after next weekend.
