HE351CW first gen

Anybody here have an he351cw on their 1st gen?

I just picked a low mile one up cheap and going to replace my h1c when I am back in Vancouver. After doing some research they seem like a good combo of power, spool, price, and durability. I do not use my truck for heavy towing.

Curious to see if anybody else has put one on their first gen and what they thought of it.

Keep us posted - I've got one sitting in the garage...

The flanges are different.....like the pattern of how it bolts to the exhaust manifold is diferrent, you will most likely have to get a adapter, figure something out for a downpipe, and if it has the electronic wastegate then your really screwed . I believe there was a recent post about this and our "first gen expert"... AKA "wannadiesel". I believe he said it was a waste of time

I'm 99% sure the bolt pattern is the same, just need to do some drilling out for different studs etc. I will be enlarging the internal wastegate. Downpipe from a 3rd gen should get me close or I will just make one from scratch. These turbos have a true 4" outlet.

On paper it looks good having a bigger compressor and exhaust wheel than the hx35. Has a single 9cm inlet turbine housing compared to 12cm dual inlet for the hx35. I've seen an he351 make 450hp on a 3rd gen in person. On competitiondiesel.com some have claimed to get 550hp.

For my goals of 400hp it should be a perfect turbo.

Big_Blue24 has some excellent posts on adapting this turbo to a 2nd gen and opinions on it.

Why not go with a HE451 instead? I've heard from several people they would rather use the 351's as a boat anchor. The 351's are about 2mm larger than an HY35 on the compressor housing, which would make it what 56mm?. The HE451's run a 62mm compressor, just my opinion but this would be my weapon of choice.

Never heard of an he451. 04.5+ He351 is 60mm compressor. As for using he351s as a boat anchor, thats exactly why I want to use it. One mans trash is anothers treasure.

wannadiesel: anything you have heard good or bad about this swap?

You know the only time I keep my mouth shut is when I don't know the answer.

Maybe the VGT's are a 60mm comp., but everyone I've talked to about these chargers say the same thing. All the guys say it is 2mm larger than an HY35. Maybe they are 60mm on the major side of the wheel. I wasn't trying to say you shouldn't use the charger, I was just curious as to why. We have two of these chargers collecting dust, with a 9cm exhaust housing they are pretty much worthless in my book. But to each their own. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Isn't there an HE341 and 351? Perhaps you are talking about the 341. To the best of my knowledge the 351's are 60mm.

It could be. But two of the guys that have discussed this, one has '04 and one has an '03 with a complete '05 engine swap, say they are the updated version of the HY35.

Update:

Turbo has arrived. I have ordered the v band flange for making the 4" downpipe.

Next things to do:
1. Port the internal wastegate
2. shim the wastegate/weld a new wastegate bracket that allows me to clock the turbo to the stock intercooler pipes.

Stock oil feed and drain lines will match up and turbo will bolt onto the stock manifold by enlaging the holes.

This swap looks very promising.

I have seen this swap in person. The guy i traded transmissions to had one. I got to drive it to test the trans before we swapped. The mounting to the exhaust manifold was different. The turbo had 2 studs on the top side. He simply drilled out the manifold to allow the stud through. Also on the exhaust housing, even though it mounts to a 4" d/p, the actual hole coming out of the turbine is more like 3 inches. The wastegate and exhaust out put dump directly into the down pipe. The only thing i didnt like was the fact that the turbo sat at about a 30* angle tilted. As far as i know, this is bad for a turbo as far as lubrication goes. The trucks these came off of had an exhaust flange that duped out at a different angle as our manifolds do. He also did kind of a nasty job rigging up the i/c piping. Spoolup was amazing though. It basicly spooled right off of idle. U could hear the whistle any time under load.

You can tilt the turbo angle. There is a v-band clamp on the center section to make the oil lines matchup. Also you have to remove the snap ring on the compressor side and rotate it as well. Then the oil lines matchup perfectly like stock.

Bogurt, just curious, how did you see "...the actual hole coming out of the turbo..."?

Despite looking outwardly very similar, to say the HE351 is just an "updated HY35" would be the understatement of the year. The wheels are 58mm intake and 64.8 on the exhaust. The exhaust housing flows waaay better than an HY35. I don't know the factory wastegate settings for the 5.9 application, but you can be sure the HE runs considerably higher boost with the MAP to go along with it.
