gsk install questions

Ok, well, I couldn't get my schedule together to watch Wannadiesel and steamdave do their trucks this weekend, so I dove in myself this afternoon. For those that have done this, here's my question: where the throttle shaft goes onto the splined shaft on reassembly, well, I marked it prior to removal, but my marks were only in grease and not paint! Now, the marks are gone and I'm kinda stuck. I turned the shaft with my fingers till I felt the slack go out of the gov spring assembly and the splines lined up fine--I think I'm ok, but I'm not convinced. Other than that, all went well (yeah, right: bad tophat&spring, bad tophat&spring!) I decided not to grind the foot...it's really not that bad to take apart and I've already got too much heat...one mod at a time. Any thoughts on the throttle shaft/splines would be appreciated.

I think you're going to have to go by trial and error. The instructions in the FAQ say 10 and 4 o'clock. If you sneak up on it one spline at a time from the loose side, the worst that will happen is it won't idle.

I've heard it said that the vast majority of them point at 10 o'clock, mine does. When I did mine I was off one click when I put it back together. I was able to keep it running using the pedal, much off that, I don't know if it would idle or not. I would start at 10, see if it will idle with the pedal, and then work from there.

I agree, I did one just a couple days ago and it, like all the others I've done pretty much line right up on the 10/4 position.

Well, it was right at 10 and 4, no problem. Had a runaway at startup, so I backed the screw out 2 turns and then worked my way back up in 1/4 turn increments. Didn't go all the way back to runaway then back off, just kept running it in till idle was about 675 then ran the low idle screw up to 800. I think I have about 1.25 turns till runaway, so I just left it for now. Low end is awesome now, but there's not much high end, and I'm about 125 degrees hotter at cruise---could my timing be too far back? I got it to my marks, but if they're anything like my throttle shaft marks, they're worthless What I've got is more heat and less smoke, but tons of boost...kinda weird. I gave the boogie screw 1/8th turn just now and I'm gonna try it. After that, I think the timing needs to come ahead.

As for the spring, driveability is awesome--it's great to hit the bottom of 3rd and 4th around 18-1900 rather than 12 or 1300. The getrag really appreciates it too The motor sounds a lot different above 2200 as well---prolly cause it's actually fueling up there now. First time I've ever heard one under load at 2800 in person---SweeeeeeeeeeeeT!!! More to come, just gotta tune some more. I can tell once it's dialed in that this will easily be the best bang for the buck, hands down.

Well, I ran the full boogie screw in a bit more---still very little smoke and no top end. Tons of boost, just not the same push. Where does the boost come from, if not from fuel? Before, If I matted it in 5th at about 55, it would run to 32psi and the truck felt like it was gonna twist in two cloud of smoke and buried speedo. Now, the boost goes right to 30psi, little if any smoke and it accelerates strongly, but the drivetrain doesn't make sickening noises of anguish. Around town low end is superb---I can't shift 1-2-3 fast enough---way snappier than it used to be, but when the boost comes on, its just soso. I kept everything clean during the install and everything is working well---it barely sputtered when I fired it up. Guess I gotta keep fiddling. Guess I gotta stop whining and take better notes next time

Sounds like you didn't get the pump advanced enough.

Ahhhh! Now I've got blue smoke if I free rev it (smells like fuel) and a slight miss. Maybe all timing related? Engine is quieter, too. I'll find soon enough---way to go on the 14ch housing, Dave

What where the differences in your boost numbers before and after the 3200 spring? Did you leave all other pump settings the same?

Well, I mis-read my mark on the full fuel screw, so when I fired it up this AM, it stumbled a bit, then started to run away after it got fuel So, I backed it out a full two turns before re-starting, effectively erasing my baseline. I'm back now to where I think I left off before the spring, but I'm getting blue smoke if I rev the engine in neutral and if I hold steady rpm at say, 1800, it will miss a bit. I think I missed my timing mark by a mile, so I'm just gonna crank it ahead in the morning. So, long story short, my settings are no the same due mostly to me being careless and cold doing it last night. Before my tampering, I was seeing as much as 35psi on my 40 psi gauge. Now I can hit 30, but again, my settings are in dire need of adjustment. Ahh, it's great to be young, dumb and in a hurry
