Governer Spring

Having got used to the tweaks I've had made to the engine, I think it's time to install a 3000 rpm governer spring. I just want to be able to pull at a higher speed (about 65 mph) in third gear. Right now pulling the trailer up a hill, I am maxed out at 60 mph at about 2500 rpm.

Can I do this without touching or changing anything else on the pump, apart from maybe having to adjust the idle screw, that is?

By the way, is it a 3000 rpm spring or a 3200 rpm spring? I've seen references to both. Are they the same?

IT is a 3200 RPM spring. The 3000 rpm spring is for the p-pumped 2nd gens (they also have a 4K available to them).

You can install the spring with little else in the way of adjustments. There are detailed instructions here that detail eveything to do.

While you are in that far, I would suggest spending an extra $25 and replacing the throttle shaft bushing and shaft o-ring as well as a new gasket on the top. Just a couple precautions that may save you having to do the job again.

Thanks guys, I have a couple of days where I don't need the truck so I can take my time doing the job, and get new parts as I find I need them. I have only 110,000 miles on the truck, and didn't expect anything to be wearing out this soon.

I printed out Bushwakr's instructions on how to install the spring, and read where the first operation is to tilt the pump over towards the fender. Why is that? Is it for accessibility, or something else?

It makes accessing the back side of the pump easier. Some guys don't bother but if you have a pump wrench then it is an easier job because the back side of the pump can be a tight fit for allen keys when you try to reach the two back bolts.
The one thing to make sure of is measure the distance from the end of the full fuel screw to the back of the screws' lock nut. Then ease the full fuel screw out or almost right out.
This will make putting the pump top back on a bit easier. Then just turn the full fuel screw back in to it's measured depth.
If you don't do this then you can experience a bit of "hang-up" of the fuel screw and it's internal lever...mostly headache stuff.

Thanks, I guess careful measuring is the key to getting it back to where it used to be. Right now, some of the instructions are hard to visuallize, but I guess all will become clear when I start getting my hands dirty.
