Going to try a powertrax no slip in a 3.07 rear

Well, I found a good deal on a powertrax no slip, which is supposed to be be a little more street friendly than the more inexpensive lock right. I hope it works OK with the 3.07 housing. Hopefully I can get it back together soon and get this rig to the track before summer is over. Wish me luck.

Is a Powertrax no slip the same as a limited slip rear differential? If you want to upgrade to a way to get both wheels turning instead of just one with an open differential, what is the best route for our rearends?

No, it's locker. That particular unit is the type known as a "lunchbox locker", they fit inside the open diff and convert it to a locker.

What does "best" mean to you? Lockers work well but they have some quirks that the driver needs to be mindful of - but the only thing cheaper and easier than this type of locker is welding up the spider gears.

a powertrax goes into an open carrier. a 900HP 2nd gen truck in the DHRA has a powertrax front and rear i believe.

its supposed to work even in the 3.07 carriers

Hey Dave, by "best" I meant a strong and durable setup you wouldn't have to worry about breaking with more power from the engine in the future. I'm sure if you bought a whole center differential that was already equipped with the ability to handle extra power and turn both wheels it wouldn't be too cheap. The "lunchbox" setup how is that on price and where would you go to get one? Did trucks equipped with factory Dana 80 rears come with a locker setup, in addition to standard open differentials that were more common?

i belived the dana 80's used pow-r-lok just like the d70's did, its a limited slip unit operated by clutches. i think Dave rebuilt his

None of them came with a locker, only the limited slip - which is a really strong unit.

It's not a lot cheaper than a limited slip or locker unit, but it is a heck of a lot easier to install.

Generally you will break an axle shaft before you break a locker.

If ya weld'em be careful on wet or snowy streets when turning. At 16 I put a welded up spiders in the trees tryin to turn on a wet street "probably inexperience with the skinny pedal didn't help either". Good luck with it.

Well, I got the unit on Friday. I read the instructions that night and installed it in the carrier Saturday morning. It went together very smoothly, no problems. I am waiting on bearing races to get it installed back in the rearend and hopefully I can give a good report on this lunchbox locker.

Depends on the axles ur running.

Lunchbox lockers break easier then a carrier type one.

I keep hearing the full on detroit lockers arent nearly as strong as they once were.

35 spline on the 3.07s, it worked fine so far. I test fit it dry, and then reassembled greased as per instructions. It went together almost too easy. However the ring gear has to be removed to get the pinion shaft out but I think it's a little easier to work on when it's sitting on the workbench. It's kind of a good thing cause I had a bad bearing anyway. I'm hoping to get my bearing races tomorrow and get this back in, then I will really know how well it's going to work.

I cant wait to here how you liked the unit. I have the lockright and I love it. Little rough on the street but being the only one who drives the truck its great. Really, really helped in the snow. Please do tell us how you like it!!
