The TEE is so you can also employ a neat little dip-stick in the center of that cap and thus monitor the fluid level.

On my Ford/Cummins, it is 2WD, so not quite so complicated to accomplish.

On it, I first screwed in a 1/2 X 3/4 Street-Ell, then an upright length of 3/4 nipple, then a pipe-cap with dip-stick welded in the caps center.

On it, I still have to crawl under to add the fluid, but that is soon going to change.

Also, to eliminate having to crawl under to actually check the little dipstick, I am going to scavenge some of those long cable-style dipsticks from old cab-over trucks and custom fit them to slide inside the clear hose that comes up under the hood, thus I will be able to check the transmission fluid as easily as I check the engine-oil.(and THEN there will be no need for the TEE)

I can check the Getrag fluid without ever touching the truck:
http://stuff.is-a-geek.net/PhotoAlbu...ics/CTD_33.jpg

It started showing on the sight glass at around 5qt, which roughly equated to the stock fill level with the Fastcoolers. I've since moved the sight glass as far up on the PTO cover as possible and it now starts to show at 6qt, which would be about a 1/2qt overfill relative to the stock fill measure.

A sight glass from a semi-hermetic Carlyle(Carrier) or a Copeland commercial air conditioning compressor would lend itself well to that application.

I also see numerous NVs in the cowboy trucks that are all to pieces.

To make any truck-type transmission last, you have GOT to drive them LIKE A TRUCK, not a Mustang.
Sigh.

Well, after replacing the nasty old mystery oil in my 'Rag with 5 2/3 quarts, it still groans in fourth gear between 35 and 40mph, just like it did before. That sound is most un-nerving. Above 40mph, the 'Rag is happy as a bird.

At least it isn't getting any worse now, I suppose...

At what speed you guys usually shift from third into fourth ? Third just runs out of legs for me above 35mph, and this is with the 3200rpm spring, fuel turned up, 16 sq cm turbo, etc.

Maybe I should mess with the other IP controls ? It does put out a big cloud of black smoke every time I shift into third and accelerate.

TIA, as usual, gentlemen.

I can comfortably tow grossing 16k up the steep passes in 3rd at 35-40 without what I feel is "wrapping" the engine out. I think I can get to about 45 pretty easy in 3rd. I wouldn't go to 4th under 40 unless you're just loafing.

Sounds like you've got something that is not adjusted correctly. Unless you have 4.10 gears?

ofcmarc & BearKiller those are good ideas. I like the idea of being able to check it under the hood. I may try this and look over the situation to do the transfer case too. BearKiller if you can't find an old dipstick from a cabover try to modify an old speedometer cable. Good ideas guys.

I havent really run it out in a while, but I think I remember seeing nearly 60 in 3rd?

My tranny HATES trying to accelerate in 4th at 35-40 mph! It sounds like a den full of badgers.

Extra Growling in 4th between 35-40 could mean that you need to shim up the mainshaft a bit... you could be running a bit TOO loose.

Good point, but main-shaft or counter-shaft, as the counter-shaft would be unloaded in 4th, just floating around in there, rattling back and forth.

Yep, that groaning noise is known as gear rattle. Mine does it too.
