Getrag Imput Shaft Failures

I have 2 - 360's. One was broke when I got the truck. Just after I bought a wreck for parts. It had a good tranny. I put it in the truck. Been in for years. I replaced the clutch about 18mos. ago and noticed that the pilot bearing in the clutch kit was not a needle bearing but a brass bushing. Now that trans is broke. While taking it out I noticed that there was nothing left of the brass pilot bushing. Opened it up and the pocket bearing is gone. I dont mean really bad, but the only thing left is the inner race. This made me decide to open up the original trans. Guess what? Same thing. Should I blame the pilot bearing entirely or high miles and thats that. What does anything think on the best type of pilot bearing to put back in. Also on a side note if anyone that has that pdf manual, I'll put you on my Christmas card list or thank you sincerely whichever you like. email to dmoreland@fuse.net

I used a sealed ball bearing when I did my trans. The flywheel will need to be bored out for the ballbearing. I only have about 4000 miles on the rebuild and clutch. so far so good. My bearings were all trashed and the pilot bushing was worn out and almost gone. That also took out the input shaft. I think the best advice is don't sit with the clutch pushed in.

Sealed ball bearing is what I use. Brass bushing is OK. Needle not so much. the input shaft bearing failures were caused by not overfilling causing oil starvation up front. if you look at the trans on level ground it is tipped backwards a little bit. Especially if you have a 4x4, or 2wd with leveling kit. The saggy 2wd front ends helps to soak the fwd bearing more.

Yeah they are all 2wd. They are all driven by my employees. I own a fence company and we use them mostly hauling and towing a bobcat. I say most of the time the travel is inside of 25 miles a trip and loads are inside the legal limits. I constantly remind them not to sit with the clutch pushed in but you know how that goes. I hadnt thought about altering the flywheel for a sealed bearing. I might have to try that if I have to wait very long on my parts to arrive.
