getrag fluid change

Can I fill my tranny through the shifter if I take it out? I tried to pull the plug today so I could check the fluid level and it's seized up real tight. Could't find my 3/8 breaker bar so when I do I'll give it a try. Also, how much fluid does it hold, before the extra quart? One more thing, I called Southbend the other day "just to look" and they recommended one of their dual disks for me. He said it would be good for pullin and the street. I just started a new job last week and the drive home is pretty stop and go. I was wondering if any of you guys were runnin the dual disk and knew how it was in traffic.
Thanks
Sam

I can't comment on the clutch, but it depends on what you plan to do with the truck, sled pull, hot rod, muddin, 20k lb trailer moving, stock etc.

On the getrag, 3.5 qts is factory fill. I've been running 5 qts- 1.5qts over filled. You can overfill through one of the top pto cover bolts, via a hand fluid pump. Or through the shifter hole. I hear its a pain to compress the spring to reinstall the shift lever. Hear you should have a friend around to push down on the lever, while one opens the snap ring or?? Either way, I've always used the pto cover bolt method. 5w30 engine oil is recommended lube for getrag. I use Mobil1 synthetic 5w30.

I'm running 5 qts valvoline full syn. I've got pulling the shifter out down to a science. It's not too bad once you've fumbled with it once or twice plus, all you have to do is open the quarts and pour them in--no hitting your head on the crossmember, etc

Good point, I think next time I service the tranny I'll try it from the top. I've think I still got a dent in my skull from a exhaust clamp bolt I hit about a year ago .

I guess all that extra clutter under a 4wd makes it hard to do it my way. I put a street elbow in the fill hole, then I just pour the lube in with a funnel. Way easier than pulling the shifter.

Well Dave, it is more cluttered then yours I'm sure but it might work. If I can get the dag gone plug out. Isn't there a link on the site about how to pull the shifter? I remember seeing something about it on here awhile ago.
