IIRC *** and INA (another bearing manuf.) are part of the Schaeffler Group. A google search should get you some US contacts.

Woah, I'm impressed by the automatic "editing" capability of forum sites these days. Alright, I meant F A G and no offense to the part of the population, you know what I mean...

Hi All,
I just need to add my experience with the Getrag. I have 430,000 plus miles on my '93. I have a 14000 pound 5th wheel that I have hauled to Alaska and back 4 times. I haul car trailers and generally abuse my truck. I had to overhaul the transmission at somewhere around 385000 miles. It was not set up properly, so it was pulled down and has been working great sisnc. This transmission, and for that matter, the truck has been the most reliable and fun rig I have ever owned. I am now even putting a '90 6BT in a '90 Suburban.
The Getrag is a greta unit if cared for and not alowed to leak.
Mike

Great information everybody!

Anyone know someone in the S.E. Michigan area that is a specialist in rebuilding Getrags? I could do it myself but I'd rather have someone do it that has done it before.

If I do it myself, where can I get the welch plug that goes in front of the front countershaft bearing? I haven't seen it available without buying a complete rebuild kit.

BTW: I like the idea of installing a ball bearing in place of the clutch bushing. Do you have do midify the input shaft?

I have not done this mod Myself (read some negative stories about it) but I believe You have to take the flywheel to a shop and have them drill it bigger to accommodate the new bearing and this one has an opening big enough for the input shaft.

If you decide to go with the NV4500HD and are worried about the 5th gear nut problem you might want to go to the Quad 4X4 web sight. They are located in Roberts MT. They were the first ones to put together a conversion kit to swap the G360 for the NV4500HD. They have developed the "Torque King" which is a very different fix for the 5th gear problem.

Unfortunately the Torque King mod is not available for 2WD. I spoke to the man there and he said he sold the rights to the 2WD version to a company that has since gone out of business. I guess this defunct company still holds the rights because he said it prevents him from building them for 2WD.

BTW: What was the down side to installing a ball bearing in the pilot?

Recommendations for parts suppliers

I finished pulling my G360 apart today. I'm glad I waited to order parts until I got it all the way apart.

I found that there are some nicks on the cup in the input shaft. If it was a seperate part it would be an easy and cheap fix. Instead it is integral with the shaft so the whole shaft gets tossed.

I've looked on various websites and found all sorts of prices for parts.

Names I've seen are Rockland Standard, Motive Gear, Drivetrain Parts (eBay) and Transparts@bestprices (eBay). I'm never sure if eBay sellers are the best as the price of entry into the business can be pretty low.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I keep coming back to the well for more knowledge.

I ordered parts from Zbag today and the guy said to set it up with ZERO preload.

I had intended to set it at the factory spec of .006 to .008 preload.

Zero sounds iffy. Opinions?

Zero preload only on used or old bearings. .006-.008 preload on new bearings.
