getrag countershaft play
getrag countershaft play
I changed the oil in my transmission the other day and noticed the couter shaft has some play in it, less than 1/16" but enought to feel it . I have about 33,000 miles on my rebuild and it had 5 qts. of mobile 1 5W30 synthetic.
The input and output shafts both feel tight and everything is quiet. The truck is driving fine with no shifting or grinding issues I just wanted to change the oil and check everything out.
What is your expert opinion on what to do now?
Do you think I can reshim it to tighten it up or are the bearings going to be toasted?
Anyone have part #'s for new Timken bearings for the counter shaft, incase I just need a few bearings?
How bad is it to run the trans like this? Another 1500 - 2000 empty miles should get me to my next break in March, I'd rather rebuild then.
Thanks for your input.

As long as the bearings are fine, with used bearings you need to re-shim it to have 0.00" pre-load. If you put new bearings in you need to preload them to ~.004-.006" pre-load.
You can remove just the tail housing of the getrag and add shims as needed without removing the entire transmission.
But if you want to change the bearings you'll have to remove the tranny to get to the front bearing.
