Talking Gear Vendor Working!!!

(I do not work for GV I am just sharing my experience)

Finally!!!! The unit is in and it was worth all of the hassle and aggravation me and my dad put in. I can finally keep up with traffic and get great mileage. I filled up the truck right before I used the GV and I recorded 21mpg empty, and I will let you all know what I get empty using the GV. While diving 65 the truck runs ~2250 rpm's (I usually run it at 55-60, 65 is too much), and now with the GV on I can do 75 at ~1800 rpm's (I run 70 at 1700 rpm's) I will tell anybody who is thinking about this upgrade and has 4:10's to highly think about installing one. I am not looking to get my money back in fuel, that was not the purpose of installing one, but the greatest benefit to me is driving. It is nice to have 9 accessible gears for anything I need.

I did notice that my EGT's were higher when driving up a small grade (I guess less boost to cool it down), but overall runs normal and almost zero boost when cruising. The truck has less engine noise, and the unit makes zero noise when going into OD, but when coming out it bumps a bit.

I want to thank PapeCat, Ace and everyone who gave their .02 cents, I had some bumps in the road but everything worked out.

Best Regards
Waldo

Waldo, if you don't mind... when all said and done how much lighter was your pocket book $$$$

About 15 yrs ago I had one in a Chevy 454 dually. I believe we used ATF and it would dirty the oil pretty quick and start to whine. Change the oil and it would run quiet for a short bit then start whining again.

The less you shift it the longer it should last.

Good luck!

I don't mind at all I purchased it used, but it came off of a 90 single cab truck with 4:10's and a 5speed, 4x4 as well. That being said I already had the correct length drive shaft, came with it. I did buy new electronics, and had to buy an 90* speed o gear due to the fuel tank, it turned out to be about 2300 when all was said and done not bad considering a new one. We'll see how long it lasts, and I did get a chance to open her up and check the internal filter to see how worn the clutch was, and to my surprise it was not bad. If it does go south 700 bucks and a core to send in and I get a brand new one.

I put in Mopar spec 75w-80, which is the GM equivalent (ok to use in GV), and replaced all the gaskets to freshen it up.

Hope this helps

Volvo cars used the same type of OD for years and the fluid to use in them is ATF not gear lube. Ken

I have the GV in my 92 but with an automatic and 4:10s. I like it but i'll like it better when I put in the 5sp or a 6sp.. 4:10s for daily driver is a bit low moreso with the auto, 13.87 mpg hiway or around town. The auto just kills it. The 5sp should wake it up and do alot for fuel mileage. Do you have it rigged up with a switch on the shifter like a big truck so you can split each gear? When I rig mine up with the 5sp I'll rig it this way. Good luck and enjoy it.

Yup I have a push/pull switch on the shifter, and can split every gear except 1st. I am excited to see the end result of my fuel mileage, before and after. I was thinking about a rear end gear swap, but I love my 4:10's even though they are a pain. What are your rpm's like with an auto plus the GV?

whereswaldo250 my tach is having issues so i'm not sure. You can most definitely tell the difference when it's in o.d.. Oh jesussaves no complaints on fuel mileage it's not good but I don't complain I could drive my lil truck and get 25+mpg and not be happy with the low power no hauling thing. Just need time and money to get all my projects finished like the 5sp install. My 93 is just setting there needing a few $$ spent on it to finish and it get's around 20 mpg. But i have patience and no hurry to finish. Just need the economy to turn around and go the other way.

I was talking about the tree huggers who want to ban all diesels and low MPG vehicles. I am getting at least 20 in the city which is great for a truck! but not as good as it would be with a GV, I just wish they were more available from factory

RollinCoalSmaoke, When the GV is on does it shift though all the gears or can you use it as just a double over? So far I can see an increase in mileage, but when I fill up is the test. The wiring survived its first rain storm yesterday when driving worked great.

Thanks PapeCat it is more comfortable driving the truck and I can drive it to California now without killing it.

I would use it as a double over, only when empty and on semi flat ground. If I were to tow or start pulling any big hills, then i would drop the getrag into 4th and use the GV as OD.

But thats me and I don't have one.
