Gear Vendor

Got a Gear Vendor off a 90 gas 1 ton van. It has the 18" tail section on the 727 whereas 90 Cummins uses a 12" tail section. I have two options, either get a used 12" section for the Gear Vendor if I can find one or change the 727 output shaft to an 18" and use all the parts of the Gear Vendor? The problem is will the longer shaft take the torque and if I add a 89% DTT torque converter will the combination take the torque?
What do you guys think???
Also does anyone have the 12" section that fits the Gear Vendor?

Is the 1000 ft-lb for the 12' or 18" trans output shaft?

Is your trans a 727 or a 518?
The 518 does have a longer shaft.

If you can use what you have use it, It will handle the torque! It would be real tough to find a used 12" GV section, and new ones are around $600.00 or so.

I have had a GV for 7 years with no problems either. They are actually rated for 1200 HP,..!

Over two years on mine now. I'm sure they are plenty strong enough for my setup.

My problem is not the Gear Vendor, it is using a longer output shaft on the 727 trans to fit the existing gas Gear Vendor setup.
This brings up the question as to why did Dodge shorten the output shaft on the 727 in the diesel verses the gas model. Did they think that the increased torsion would present a problem with the long shaft used on the gas model?

I doubt it. Stock big blocks were making upwards of 500ft.lbs. torque back in the day. I suspect any changes to the output were having more to do with driveline combo fitments for various different wheelbase vehicles. Just a guess.

727. Why would you put an overdrive on a 518?

My experience is that a shorter extension was used on the trucks in order to have a long enough driveline (2 piece). There were short tailshaft 727's long before they had the Cummins.
