Fuel tank capacity

How large is the fuel tank on 1st gen trucks? i think my fuel gauge is completely, hopelessly wrong. I have never put more than 18 gallons of fuel in this truck, but the needle was riding the E line when i did that. i usually put between 16-17 gals. and go for 300-350 miles. Fuel mileage is fine, but i would love to travel farther between fill-ups. So.....how large is the fuel tank? redwake

I know my 96 CTD is 35 gallons.
un-sure about the 1st gen, but I go 300 miles and fill up.
always usually taking 20 gallons. My gauge is completely broke, so I dont bother pushing over 300 miles, I'd rather not run out.

Im sure someone on this site knows how many gallon tanks 1st gens come with....

owner's manual doesn't say, but the FSM lists the diesels as being 30 gallons.

Yep. mine's the same way. Never took it to the light, but I'm thinking it would be hard down on the "E" stop before it ever got to turning on the low fuel light. Another odd thing I have going on with the fuel gauge is it will read empty when full, then start bouncing up and down the first 20 miles or so after a fillup, before it stays up near full and starts it's normal descent. Strange...

400-500 miles between fill ups. Takes on about 20-25 gallons.

Molded in the bottom of the tank (near the rear ???) you should see a two digit number ( about 3/8's high) Usaly 30.
Look for that. mine is a 30, came from a '92 club cab.

It's 30 Gallons. My low fuel light comes on at 1/4 tank and I have 10 gallons left at that point.

Mine used to do that before I started adding Power service to the fuel at every fill. I think I had some gunk in my tank because my filter clogged shortly after too but it now just swings right up to full.
