Fuel Pump Replacement: Just watched the videos...have a q or two

Hey guys,

I just watched the Master Tech 91-93 fuel pump replacement videos, but I have a few clarifying questions:

1. I don't think I need the barring tool, as I can simply rotate the engine by the alternator pulley, correct?

2. The t bar gear puller. Can anyone go into detail on a way to do this without purchasing a high-priced tool that I won't use more than once or twice?

3. That's actually all I can think of. Anyone who has done this have any pointers for the kid?

i use a 15mm socket on the harmonic balancer bolts and rotate it clockwise so you know youre not loosening them up. seems to work great. i cant get mine to turn on the alternator without the belt slipping.

any tool i need but cant afford i usually borrow. when i skipped my pump gear i just borrowed the local shops gear puller and brought it right back.

i think the gear threads are m8 1.25. if youre removing the pump gear then youll need that size.

Ha...found this thread:
http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/98...ternative.html

Seems like it'll do the trick.

Anything else that might not be straightforward?

I'm gunna kill my engine vibration if it kills me! It's gotta either be the pump or the clutch assembly...and I don't really want to pull the tranny a third time yet...

Yeah, i'll bet...but I guess if I did lose it, that'd be a good reason to finally kill the dowel.

I did mine not too long ago and its super easy. Be sure to check the timing pin to make sure the little tip is still on it.

Nice. Yeah the videos made it look pretty easy, honestly. Kind of surprised the guy didn't wear gloves, though.

I use a steering wheel puller and 2 bolts form the airhorn. (These are the ones that bolt the airhorn and grid heaters to the intake).
