fuel filter

I'v seen several threads reguarding fuel filters for our trucks. Since I work on boats i'v found 90% of all diesel boats use a common filter type, i started running one on mine. After looking at factory filter after 25k miles it still looks new. Its a suction filter and will remove all the water and down to 2 micron particulates.

I run the 411348 model.

I love West Marine stores. And I don't even own a boat!

I like see-thru bowl-type filters.

How does one determine whether a filter is suction-side or pressure-side ??

I never see any information regarding this in any of the specs.

What would be the outcome of putting a pressure filter on the suction side and vice-versa ??

Thanks.

Generally if there's a bowl it's a suction side filter.

If you put a pressure side filter on the suction side you will have excessive restriction. If you put a suction side filter on the pressure side you might have a leak if you are running more than 25 psi fuel pressure.

The Racors are very popular, but I like the Davco setup better. No changing filters because "it's time" or it "might be restricted". With their setup when the bowl is full, the filter is done.

I ran a stock filter/head on the suction side from my auxiliary tank right along in series with the stock filter on the pressure side for about year and saw better flow runnnig on the aux tank - pulled down less under load. I believe the difference there at the time was the 5/16" feed line on the stock tank vs. the 3/8" line coming from the aux tank. It didn't look like running that filter in suction mode hurt anything at all.

But of course as always, YMMV.
