front end bounces
front end bounces
while braking, the kind of breaking when you are driving fast at night around twisty mountain roads and you come up on a sign suddenly that says 20 mph and you quickly push hard(not slam) on the brakes. the front end seems to bounce. I can tell cause I see my fog lights light bounce. do you think that this has anything to do with me swapping out my front rear shackles? Hole to hole on the stock shackles are I believe 4 1/2" and the new ones are like 5 1/2". I needed to swap the old ones out, they were tilted all the way to the rear, alowing the spring pack role to touch the frame, which also caused my tires to rub on the wheel well. The new ones alowwed my tires to clear. Also, my kyb shocks are only 6 months old.
Sounds like your king pin bushings are toast. Jack the truck up. Put the front end on jack stands and see if you can move your wheel up and down. If you can't by hand use your jack. The upper pin plastic bushing wears causing a front end hop and it might happen when your braking if you where haulin **** and braking

Thanks for the quick responses. Can someone be so kind as to post a pic with arrows of the king pin bushing, along with any other bushings to check? I have the shop manual, and have gone through it thoroughly, and cannot seem to locate a king pin bushing.

If you have access to a dial indicatior, check for runout and warped rotors in the front . If that dose not show anything ,check the rear drums for being out of round. I had the same problem on my 92 and everthing in the front end was good. The frame and suspention are so stiff a hop from a out of round drum will feel like a bad front rotor.
tell me, does this have anything to do with this other problem of mine, and that is when I come to a stop light that went suddenly from green to yellow and no way I am making it even at my speed, why is it my steering wheel tends to turn towards the left, and ends up at around 11:00 when I finally come to a stop? When the light turns green I straighten the wheel out to drive straight and true. Now keep in mind, as I am coming to a screeching halt and the wheel is at 11:00, the truck is driving straight, and not heading left. It only does this at sudden stop situations, and usually the last 25 feet. I tried disconnecting the ABS, still does it. My rotors were checked out last year, and the tech said all was good.
As to the 11:00 deal on a hard stop, ck your rear axle mounting to the springs. I had an 86 gas w250 with a 4 inch lift. The lift used a block in the rear ON TOP of the factory block ( a no no I have since learned). Anywhoo, any sudden hard shock to the rear, be it hard acceleration OR braking would cause the steering to do this. As an example, if I slammed on the brakes hard enough to shift the rear and make the wheel off ctr all I had to do to re-center it was nail the skinny pedal a few times. I wanted to swap the rear springs to get rid of the blocks but I wound up getting rid of the whole truck instead.
Among other things, a brake pull to one side can be another symptom of linings that have overheated at one time. Also it's a good idea to remove the calipers and pads, and clean up every surface that the caliper and pad slides against, right down to bare shiny metal.
