Friendly highway speed question

I had just bought a 89 350 5 sp, 2 wd, all stock, well maintained, and put some new stock sized tires on it
235/85/16.
There is no tach, but i would like one,
What is a good speed highway speed, I am going 110 miles a day in this thing,
I am now running 50/50 diesel/waste oil., and it is noticably quietier on the highway at about 70 mph!!!
23 mpg overall,
thank you for any imput!
Peter.

Sounds like you have a pretty good combo already. A tach would be better, but listen to the engine and you can tell if it's wound too tight.

My 5-speed is happiest at 60 and 72-ish. 60 is good because of less drag, I think, and 72-ish puts my engine right in it's sweet spot. Best overall economy is still at 60 though, as these bricks push a lot of wind.

very low mpg's

I don't know how ya'll are getting those high mpg's..., I barely get 8 mpg with mine towing a 10K lb trailer, and it slows down to about 40 mph on hills... and likes to overheat...
I've done all that can think of to fix it.., installed High Performance (HP) fuel injectors and a rebuilt HP injector pump with the 3000 spring last year, it has the Banks Power Pak Turbo and Intercooler. I've checked all the hoses for leaks, and when I get on it the turbo boost gauge pegs at 30 lbs.
I've called Banks and they said that the low mpg maybe because I'm generating Too Much boost...
I have a 93 W350 4X4 automatic (3:53 gears) with 141K miles only.
Any ideas?
Thanks

That is COOL. I tried out a 25% mix and was nervous about the 50/50 test, but since I have heard it from more than 1 person, I'M READY! Just gotta get some more used oil now...

I looked unred the truck, at the real axle housing, i found 2 tags, one says only add fluid for limited slip rear, The other was very small.
said 46.1, I doubt that this is the rear ratio, The truck will go 85+ mph,
It likes 75mph,
But if it does have a 460 rear it must have a crazy 5 th gear, mabey .75-1
what ratios will the 89 getrag 5 sp have in it?????
especially in OD!
Today i am running a heavy mix of WVO
I filled the tank from 1/4 that had a 50/50 mix
I ran 110 miles. added another 5 gal of WVO
then ran another 110 miles, and added 5 gals of wvo
and once again 110 miles, another 5 gal of WVO
so i dont know the exact ratio, but it is alot of vegge,,,
cold start the engine will lope a bit hard for my tastes, But with a pull of the idle lock will stop that
Highway it is running quiet!!!!
Peter.

If your boost gauge is pegged at 30 psi then you don't know what max boost you're getting. Are you blowing black smoke when you're pulling up the hill? Is the boost gauge pegged when you're towing that load on the straight and level? What kind of profile does the load have?

How much "overheat" do you get? You didn't pull the thermostat did you? If you did then it's running cold on the level stretches and that will hurt mileage. If your timing is retarded it will hurt mileage also.

Lots of things to consider. I don't know what mine will get towing but I get about 19 empty driving around town and highway at 65.

You probably have 3.54 gears. The Getrag OD ratio is 0.77:1.

I have found that my mileage drops off over 70 mph, but I know some other guys get better mileage at 75+ than I do at 70.

I get 21 mpg with getrag and 3.07's in OD cruising on the I-5 frewway 240 miles a day back and forth to work at 80 MPH. I tried going the speed limit (65-70) for a tank and got 24 mpg. With the 727 I was getting 16-17 mpg average mostly highway driving at 70

Hey Flash, are you rebuilding the Gear Vendor unit yourself? Mine has a smoked OD clutch and I need parts, and was wondering what you paid for the parts.

Thanks!

They would rather rebuild mine for $750 and sell me that parts, but I think they will anyway. I didn't know it was smoked when I got it, so I already have a new driveshaft ready to go as soon as I get'er dun.
