free hy turbo question

I got a free hy35? with the 9cm wastegated housing but i dont have the elbow for the back of it. i know the elbow woldnt work on my stock exaust anyway. I was reading some posts about people doing this swap to stock trucks but i have no idea what piece they are using for the flange. does anybody have any info on a part # or somthing i can mod in there without hackin up my stock tubing?

IF it is truly an HY35, the back cover on the turbine housing unbolts with 5 (?) bolts.
If it's truly an HY35, the back cover off an HX35 bolts on.
The earlier HX35 one is the band-clamped on style, whereas the later HX35 and the HY35 have the elbow cast into the cover.

Some places actually offer the covers in steel, POSSIBLY with a larger outlet.

Mark.

If you can only find or consider a later HX-35 or HY-35 rear cover with the integrated cast elbow, you can run a 2nd gen 4" downpipe as a few guys here have done. I'm considering it one day to eliminate the "S" turn of the factory 3" and aftermarket 4" downpipes and just have more of a sweeping elbow. Seems like it would be easier flowing but that's just my thinking.

Here's a link to a recent thread regarding the HX/Y-35 outlet. The guy who started the thread made his own outlet flange. One picture is of the integrated cast elbow that Mark mentioned. I don't see why a 4" flange couldn't be used instead of a 3".

If you can't find one, BD Power makes a copy of the stock flange/adapter. Its $63. I made my own from some plate and the flange off an old downpipe.

You have a pic of that? I might want to try it out on my D250.

I just edited my original post and linked to your thread .

Here's a link to and a picture from a thread I found after searching. The cast elbow used is slightly different having a v-band flange on it but the 2nd gen 4" downpipe would bolt to either the integrated elbow or the v-banded elbow. Obviously, it's an h1c turbo.

I ran an Hy35 a few years back and it was a nice upgrade, especially for free. It will spool instantly. Mine had the 45* cast elbow like in the above pic. I did get a 2nd gen 4" downpipe to fit in my truck with this turbo/elbow setup.

We swapped an hy35 onto my buddys 92 and used the v-band clamp style flange off an hx35. We took his elbow off and put the hx35 v-band flange on, then he could clamp it right up to his stock exhaust.

I know its a little unrelated to this thread but what is the best way to remove the greasy resdue from the compressor housing. i see that there is a large snap ring but i would like to leave it assembled if possible. maybe mild degreaser or carb cleaner?

Yes that would work. Last two housing's I cleaned with aluminum acid cleaner then wire wheeled them to a shine. I sandblasted the exhaust housings. Of course this was with the housings off.

I've never taken a turbo apart until recently, the snap ring came out easy with some channel-lock pliers. The housing comes right off. No big deal at all. My HX35 was keyed with a tiny roll pin and a notch - easy to put it back with the same clocking again.

I washed the housing in the solvent tank at work, and blew it off with compressed air. Done.
