Flywheel housing/Bellhousing
I'm about to start an outframe on two B's and I am trying to line up most of the parts ahead of time. I still need to get over and pick up the engines, which leads me to my question. Does anyone know what the size/pitch of the bell housing bolts are that go into the Dodge flywheel housing? I want to pickup some all-thread and nuts so I can hang them on my stands. Thanks for the help.
JD730, I would guess they are 12x1.0 or 1.25 but I only got a quick look when I was over looking at the engines originally. I suppose I could take the flywheel housing off and use bolts into the block itself. Unforturnaly the smallest engine stand adapter I ever made was for a C model, so this is somewhat new territory as I've never rebuilt a B, only field repaired. Thanks for the help though.
I'm sorry I misunderstood your first post. The bellhousing bolts where the trans bolts up are 3/8-16, my 93 bellhousing is and the 95 one on it now also is, newer ones might be different, but I doubt it. I'm not sure I would hang the engine off an aluminum bellhousing adaptor though.
I've got 3 M11's and one ISX and are hanging on the flywheel housing. I do support the front of the block when I do it this way. I'm in the process of making adapters for the M11's and the ISX since I know I'll be doing more of those engines very shortly. I doubt I'll do another B in the near future so I'm not sure I want to take the time to make an adapter. I agree that it is better to hold the engine up with bolts into the block. Also makes it much easier to work around the rear of the crank.
Ok, you've talked me into it. I'll just pull the flywheel housing off tonight and fab up something to work on my new engine stands. Thanks for the help.
As a side note, if anyone wants a relatively low mileage flex plate you can have it for the price of shipping. These engines are not going in the same application they came out of.

Well yeah if you were supporting the front of the engine also then thats a completely different story!! But just hanging off the back then I wouldn't, I was worried hanging mine off the back by itself even using the block!!
Where abouts are you located anyways?

It depends on what day. I'm on call so I move around a lot, but I'm mostly in Western Washington.
On the bigger engines I try and hang them from the side for the most support. I was just trying to take a short cut, and I should know better by now! I'll just take the long way home.
With the wet weather suddenly having arived I'm going to try and stay home more, or get sent over the hill to the dry country. Thanks again for the info.
