First trip with new gauges
First trip with new gauges
Well I took my first long trip with all the new gauges installed. I had a 4000 lb camper and I was towing a trailer that was about 1000 lbs total. My transmission ran about 150 on level road and about 180 going up long hills. The temperature sensor is in the pan. I thought it would run hotter. I have the Dodge heavy duty transmission cooler that has a fan and the fan would be on quite often. Does anyone know at what temperature that fan turns on? The other concern was the pyro temp. On the long hills it would get to about 1150 degrees. The sensor is pre turbo. This is without any mods to the pump or engine. Should I be concerned about this? I was going to do some pump tweeking but was worried that would put the temperature over the edge.

The higher exhaust temperature may be due to retarded timing. If you haven't done so, have the engine timing checked and a valve set done. After that you can start tweaking and playing with the power settings.
I ran too long with bad timing and it would be hot all the time with little or no effort. After the timing was adjusted back just to stock values, the EGT's dropped and you could add more power via the pump. I have the pump maxed as far as I can get it, and still don't get over the 1150°F mark pulling an 8000Lb trailer up a 6% grade at 90°F ambient temp.
