First Gen. models/need clarification

Ok, I've been looking for a first Gen Dodge CD. I have yet to find it written the difference between the W and D series. They look different to me.

Also, when did Dodge start using the VP44? I would like to find a pre-computerized truck if possible....just the basics. What do I look for? Years?

Any links? The answer is probably right under my nose I'm just not good at finding it.

Thanks for all your help.

All the trucks have a rudimentary "computer". The non-intercooled trucks ('89-'91) have a black box on the firewall that runs the intake heaters/WTS light, the WIF light, and the KSB. '92 and '93 trucks have a PCM between the battery and the fender that runs all those items except the KSB. In addition it runs the charging system, and the A/C, OD, and cruise if so equipped. '91.5 trucks are the oddballs, they have a PCM like the later trucks but it does not run the charging system.

2nd gen 12 valves have a PCM that runs the same stuff as the late 1st gens.

None of the 12 valve trucks need an operating PCM to run and drive.
