First Gen Fuel Gauge

Why does it seem that, no matter how I drive, my fuel gauge seems to move to the halfway mark MUCH faster than the rest of the tank? Its not like its accurate to begin with anyways, but is there a fix for this? common problem? please its annoying!

Mine takes much longer to go from half to empty then full to half.

Same here. The funny thing is how the last quarter seems to last longer than the first three.

I love that last 1/4 tank.

yeah, I know... keep it full.

I had one that wouldn't move off full for at least 100-125 miles the it seemed that it gained speed on the way down.

I always thought it dose that because of the way the tank is shaped.

For about 3 months now Ive been depending on the low fuel light. I know it usually works the other way. My gauge works good till about 3/4 of a tank and then it does what it wants to. It will make diesel then take some away. I go until I hit 325 on the trip and then give it some fuel. Need to get this fixed though. Im guessing that since the low fuel light is working the sending unit is good which would make the guage bad. Looks like I need to bust out the soldering torch.

I've gone at least 25 miles down the Interstate with the light on. I used to also keep track by mileage but now my odometer quit working. Someone said on here once that the light comes on at 5 gal. Don't know though.

If I got fuel as soon as the light came on, it would take 22 gallons to fill it (30 gallon tank.) That was my first 1st Gen, a '93. I haven't seen the low fuel light come on yet in this one I just got--probably doesn't work, like the 4x4 light.

The first (and last) time my low fuel light came on I was able to put 29 gallons in a 30 gallon tank. That's cutting it a bit too fine for me.

DennyT I had the same exact problem with my truck. I pulled out the sending unit and cleaned the contact points. I also noticed that by pushing on the float arm i could get the contact points to separate. So i bent them so they would stay in contact. Now the gauge works just fine.
