fiberglass - steel weight difference
fiberglass - steel weight difference
how much weight would you save going from an original body w250 reg cab long box to a complete fiberglass body (chopped fiberglass race cab, one piece fiberglass front end, fiberglass boxsides, gutted interior with race seats) w250 reg cab short box?
I would say an easy 1500-2000lbs, you'd be surprised how much all the interior in one of these trucks weighs. What are your plans? The cheapest way to go all fiberglass would be to use a stadium truck body that is all one piece. This really wouldn't be the way to go if you still wanted to use it on the street but it would be perfect for racing (offroad or drag).
i was thinking take a regular cab long box 4wd and put a fiberglass shortbox body on it with a roll cage and racing seats. for drag racing and occasional street driving. www.showcars-bodyparts.com those guys sell everything to do a complete fiberglass body
That would be sweet to see a fiberglass body Dodge truck door slammer. If it was me doing it I think I'd go all the way and just build a tube chassis too. If these trucks can run 12s and 13s with all stock bodies just think how fast one would be with a tube chassis and fiberglass body, should take it down 3-4 seconds easy. It would really be something if you could get it to lift the front wheels, that would just scare the crap out of people, but I don't know with the cummins motor.
You'll save a lot. I heard of a stock chassis shortbed C-10 (which normally weigh about 3500) coming in at 2300 w/o driver. A lot of weight savings actually comes in the dash, interior, steering column, etc.
You don't notice the difference until you've lifted a door shell, SE door and a LE door. Especially an LE door, those suckers are heavy.
