I never even considered it. The torque of these engines is pretty high and I wouldn't want to upset the apple cart. I ran a 4 inch system starting at the bottom elbow of the down pipe and am quite satisfied with it. I have been told that these old 12 valves don,t breath that good anyway so spending a lot on oversized exhaust isn't cost effective unless you do some extensive engine modifications. There are some good pre bent kits out there still available at a descent price. You might have to contact the distribitor directly because they don,t always put everthing on the web or in their catalog.

All you'll ever need is 4". www.bigexhaust.com has a 4" mandrel bent piece that goes past the t-case quite nicely. Buy pieces separately or complete 4" kit back.

speaking of these 12 valves not breathing well, is it possible to put a 24 valve head on the first gen to get them to breath more? this is just a curiosity question thanks

downpipe

Hey Bill,

Did you use a 4" downpipe on your 89? It looks like you have a wastgated 14cm (less space) . I was wondering how much you had to tweak it if it is a 4" downpipe.

Tim, not only do I have a wastegated 14cm housing, I have a BIG 4" outlet turbo that sticks back further. Still though plenty of room to come out of the turbo with your flange into a 4" 90* short radius elbow cut to proper length, then 4" down. I used a 4" cast elbow for a hx40 from Cummins. The 'Cobra' pipe. Pics in photo gallery. A must piece for guys that want to install a B1 or hx40 in there 1st gen.
