Engine rev's hi on startup.
My buddy called last night he has a old 89-90 ram diesel with 40" mudders on it. He loves to wallow in the mud like a pig,any way he has parked the truck for a while and he went to start the truck it fired right up right away but he say's the thing over rev's so he shut's it down, I asked if the throttle is binding up but he say's no he checked that out. has anybody had a problem like this?
When's the last time he adjusted the idle? Have him look at the throttle linkeage and see if it's sitting all the way closed when the truck is running... maybe some mud or something gummed it up.
Seriously, do NOT start it again until...............
Pull the VIN number off it, go to or call a DC dealer and ask them to run the VIN to see if that pump should have or should be subject to safety recal.
There was a number of these trucks that had a recall because a particular internal valve/spring could fail resulting in engine runaway.
If it was already done it should be on record, if not, then you are still good to get it done under the safety recal as far as I know...
Pastor bob....

I have that recall notice right her (#605). It is for late 91 through early 92 trucks with original pumps and 91, 92, and 93 trucks with warranty replacement pumps. His year should not be affected by that issue.

INJECTOR, I had to laugh at this, "...He loves to wallow in the mud like a pig..."
This isn't related to the idle problem, but I hate going through deep mud, and we have plenty of it in the south.
I'm envious of you guys out west that have more places to go "trail riding". To me, it's much more fun to hang out the window while watching the wheels go up and down as the suspension does it's thing.
