EGT's on a stock 1st gen
I have a 1992 Dodge d350, 5 speed, with 3.54. The truck blows a small cloud of black smoke when started and smokes very slightly in low rpms under acceleration.
The pump still has factory paint on the pump screws.
I was pulling a trailer with about 4k total around Ohio last week. The previous owner put gauges on it. EGT, tach, and boost in the center of dash. The EGT probe is post turbo. I was running 750-800 all day at 65mph in 5th gear.
Does this seem kinda high for a stock truck post turbo ?
Thanks !

That's what mine reads as well...post turbo set on mine too. But I'm non-IC so it should run a bit hotter.
The puff of black on first fire is normal, but the hazing while driving leads me to think that you might have bad injectors leaking fuel. And if the injectors are leaking a bit of excess fuel it will also raise your EGT's.

My 93 12V is bone stock, never see it above 600 degrees. I don't tow with it so that would run it up some I would think. I'd say you're pretty much in the ball park. The hazing's not normal (I have a 93 and a 92, neither do it), injector(s) probably a good place to start.

Stock injector since the factory paint still on them.
I had a problem with the KSB solenoid when I first got it. Just needed a new seal.
Water in the fuel light on when I bought the truck. Changed filter and only after I changed the filter did it start blowing a black cloud on start up.
Smokes slightly under 2/3 throttle when after shifting gears its low in rpms (900-1200). Like I can barely see it in the mirror. Once at 1600-2200 rpms no smoke.
Its not really using a lot of fuel. Last trip I think I got 20 empty.
Thanks guys for the info !

A 92 will have the big lagmaster exhaust 21cm exhaust housing. My Dad's 92 hazed smoke when it was bone stock, Put a 16cm exhaust housing on it and got rid of all the smoke no matter how you drove it, rotated the fuel pin and still didn't smoke. It only smokes now that i have the pump turned up.
I like the 12cm housing on a 5 speed truck, But if you're towing it's not a great idea. Mine will get toasty as the 12cm housing becomes a restriction since it's small. I think in your case a 16cm housing would work good.

Guys stop. 800* POST turbo indicates something VERY wrong. What is your max boost and cruising boost? I have mine post turbo (for now) and at the end of a 1/4 mile run, it gets up to 600-700*. That is at 85mph too.
Check for torn IC'd boots and a busted intercooler. Or you have a bad turbo.

doesn't really matter what the gauge says, so long as it's tapped into the intake, and not the exhaust side. your boost numbers are pretty indicative of a stock truck. Your EGTs like dieseljon said, are not normal for only a 4k tow. Not that I would know for sure, as I never had gauges on my stock truck while I was towing that weight. But I've never heard anyone get that hot, ever, post turbo regardless of what was being towed on a stock tune.
I would check the intake side for leaks. Check that air filter out too. It might be good and clogged. And pull the intake tube off and check the turbo for shaft play and oil through the intake. might be worth pulling the downpipe and looking for oily residue in the exhaust too.
For giggles, what kinda mileage is on the truck? Mine ran fine with the stock injectors but had a little haze sometimes when it was stock (at 250k miles). That was like 3-4 years ago. I replaced the injectors 3 years ago. And just last winter I had the tips replaced with these 7x.014s, and the shop reset the pop pressure back up to stock. The guy who did the work said they were popping off about 1000psi too low so they had to be reset/shimmed a bit. Still got 20mpg even with them popping off WAY lower than they were supposed to be. It even ran good too.
