Dyno Testing

Hi all-

I was thinking that I may want to run my 93 on a dyno at the Hoosier truck club rally. The only thing is that I don't want to bust it as this is my daily driver. I want to know if there is much risk involved in running a basically stock truck w/ 185k. I'd like to know what numbers I'm really working with, purely for grins.

Also, what is involved in a run?

Thanks,
Mitch

Generally you'll hurt your truck much more easily on the street than on the dyno. On dynojets, it's a quick burst, for the most part. Load dyno's usually don't last very long either, not that I've ever been on one though. On the street you're pushing the entire weight of the truck. On the rollers, it's only the weight of the rollers and or load or brake of the rollers.

Bill covered the risk of damage part, I'll get the "What's involved?" question.

The dyno tech will put a strip of reflective tape on your crank damper. You will pull your truck onto dyno, the tech will chock the front wheels and strap the rear axle to the floor to load the tires on the roller and to hold the truck in place. You or the dyno tech will "drive" the truck up to top gear, then floor it until the truck defuels. That's basically it.

So its not all that dangerous to the truck? I guess I just here about people breaking stuff on dyno's b/c they're pushing for max hp. Thanks for the input.

And what is Defueling?

When you get towards the top of your RPM band, the governor in the injection pump starts cutting the amount of fuel you get, limiting RPM and power.

A Mustang Dyno is a load type dyno and will generally give you a better torque reading. The negative - I don't like the operator input and the fact that the only one available in my area has the "dyno tech" running the truck. I like to run my own truck.

On a Dyno Jet you're spinning a pair of 5700 lb rollers and will generally give you better RWHP reading. This is the dyno I have run on the most. There are tricks to running on a Dyno Jet that can help you generate better numbers.

Dyno Dynamics is an Australian built dyno that can provide about a 1500 lb load. This is my personal favorite dyno but it is not all that easy to find.

Loads on any one of these dynos, as stated, should not harm a stock or moderately built truck. A typical run will last 10 to 20 seconds. A dyno run on a stock truck establishes a good base line for future modifications. If you plan to BOMB your truck it is best to run on the same dyno as you add enhancements.
