dyno results.he-351vs hx. dyno day fun.

went to my first dyno day.milked the cows at 4:30am and drove south 140 miles to spanish fork,ut. got there right as they started, tried to talk to everyone i could to learn stuff. i wasnt the lowest dyno #.!
old dyno#w/hx & pods, 298hp,808 tq on a mustang, 400 hp,1000 tq on a dynocom.(a little high just posting to show difference in dynos)
new # with he-351,bigger injectors (5x.0013?) on a superflow windyn v2.8 .
364.4 rwhp at 1350* egt, 40+ psi boost, turned afc cone to shallow side from ground side for my tow/fuel economy setting, made 331.5 hp @ 1150* and 38 psi. very little smoke either run once turbo lit.
very pleased overall, my goal being a 350 hp reliable driver/tow truck.

I,ll get the bad (excuses?) out of the way first, then get to the good.
I think drive pressure hurt my higher fuel run, the wastegate is set at 38 psi but with more fuel my boost crept to well over 40, maybe hit 50, i didnt enlarge wastegate opening as some have suggested. ilove this turbo on the steet/towing,but its got to let more exhaust out to be a dyno queen. im out of room, i guess i need to post again.

sorry its long.

cont. the bad: no torque reading. i set-up for torque, my past dynos with the hx surprised the dyno operators with my tq to hp ratio, and these guys did mainly diesels. the ve is great for low end tq. i could have showed up a lot of guys i think with my tq #. the rpm pick-up wouldnt work thy said. bad:is dyno low? heard several guys mention they had better #,s on another local dyno. watched several dissapointed p-pumpers with big singles or twins and shop built pumps lay down mid to high 400hp # vs claimed 600+hp. bad:most trucks were very modified drag, puller,or play trucks, i wanted to see more driver/work trucks with chips/intake/exhuast for comparison, only 6 1st gens i think. no 1st gens broke 300hp mark but me. probably 25 of the 40 or so trucks had after market turbo,s/ twins. i put down more than all but a couple stock turbo trucks, dmax and a 08 ford, dpf delete, egde program, put down 480 hp! i was impressed. anyway heres some good: some trucks i beat, 01 dodge-356 hp,03 ford-271 hp,00 ford-300 hp, 04 dmax-360 hp,06 dodge-330 hp, 92 1st gen,ddp4s,he 351,ats trans,t/c,shop tuned pump-281 hp. 91 i/c, 270 hp,

When I did mine they gave me a torque rating of like 800 with 297 horse. The more I thought about the torque rating the more I questioned it. I talked to Taterfarm about it and he was second guessing his also. We dynoed the same day. He called and they said the torque was a computer guess due to the fact of no tach signal. They said the horsepower rating was accurate. I kinda wish they took the extra time to set up the optical tach so I could know my torque. O well. My guess would be upper 5's for my 89.

This was last year on a mustang dyno in Maine.

sorry, this has gotten too long. bottom line: i felt the he-350 gave me 50+ hp vs hx and cools better.dyno confirmed that. great tow turbo. cruise at 80mph freeway, 12to 14 psi boost,750*. for cheap its very good, got mine for $100, w/50 k miles. spent another $40 on 4" elbow to cut and make down pipe. turbo does has limit due to small exhaust housing, felt like it on top end on the dyno. bigger wastegate may solve that. i feel my torque is close to 900 ftlbs. it pulls alot harder around 2000 rpm than the hx. dyno graph is crappy, has mph and hp curve, based on matching my rpm to mph i made over 300 hp from about 2300 to 3000 rpm. last thought on dyno day, people are very interested in ve pumped trucks and conversion. my truck really drew a crowd all day. dont know if i,ll go to another dyno day, not enough truck action, i want to try sled pulling next. thanks to poeple on this forum for educating me about the 1st gen, dont think i would get 200hp to yhe ground without the help. sorry its long post.

my mustang run had an optical tach, dont know what to think of dyno # in general. i see alot of guys on these forums make more power than me with less mods, dont know why.i still love to see the info. it seems it takes alot of fuel at high rpm to dyno well on any dyno. people were alot more impressed by my ve 364 hp than a p-pumped truck with 450 hp. i got a kick out of the interest in 1st gen ve . a dmax made 800 fuel, 1100 on nos.

i talked to the other kid with the he-351, dd4s, he still has stock lift pump, he has the parts to dyno better, hopefully he can find more power. he had a real nice 1st gen. on tq i read somewere ve pumps made better tq then other pumps, like 2.2 or 2.3 to 1 ratio. dont know if its fact, heard it more then once though. i wanted to help the 1st gens more but i live too far away.

According to the calculator you would be making 735 torque at your 364 horse at 2600 rpm.
Seems a bit off to me?

could be on the tq, who knows without dyno set up tto really read it. another dyno of interest was a 08 6.7 dodge, 6sp dfp delete, edge programmer i think, intake. put down 330 hp. not nearly the # the 08 ford with simular mods put down. around 475 hp

Did anyone get torque results? I think the ford put better HP numbers down because they turn more rpms, but i'd bet the torque was less than the cummins. And we all know that torque is where its at...

I don't know, those 6.4 fords are putting down 500+ with a dpf delete, intake and programmer, stock tranny also.

Bigblue 24v with a 2nd gen 24v he351cw also saw about a 50hp increase over his hx35 from what I remember. 3rd gen guys also report roughly 50hp increase over the he341. These numbers are if you have the extra fuel to burn. Highest dyno I have seen for an he351 is about 550whp. There are lots between 350 and 450 though and useable power.

If you are not running a lot of timing it is pretty common to have tq in the high 800's with HP in the low 300's.

thanks for responses, as i watched the power curves on the dynos computer the ve pumped trucks reall make power at lower rpms than others. the he has the torqiest feel of any turbo ive ran. i still wonder about 500+ hp out of a 9 cm housing, maybe i need to open wastegate opening more and see. as i said boost creeped up bad. i think drive pressure at real hi rpm/boost is its downside. on the road /towing it is incredible. even at 75 mph and hitting it to 90 it cools and pulls well. it does have its limits though
