Door panel?

So im working on the interior of my crew, i am working on doing some re upholstery on the door panels, my question is does the vent on the bottom of the door panel serve a purpose other than the part where the speaker sound comes through? I wondering if i can just build a whole new panel to cover all the carpet and vent and mount the speaker in the panel?

It releases the air pressure when you shut the door

Are you running the original crewcab door from the 80's? Or are you running the donor doors? The difference between the two doors is the original crew doors have no venting in them...just solid metal at the bottom, minus where the speaker goes. The donor 1st gen door have air vents built into the bottom of the door...to allow air to escape when you close the door.

They are of of a 93 doner. I was kinda thinking thats what it was for. Its not a big deal if i just upholster around them and paint it with the rest of the panel, i figured if i could cover them up i would. So what did the older crew doors do to release air with out the vents being there like the newer doors?

They were loose enough that they didn't need them. With the kick panel vents and such they weren't very air tight. Although it still caused problems with newer trucks, speaking with old timers they still talk about you can't close the door on a dodge lol.

I contemplated using ford vents that go in the rear of the cab and blocking of the doors. Might be something you are interested in.

You know what would be ultra trick is some vehicles automatically roll down the window in the door so when it's closed it vents the air through the slightly open window. After the door is closed the windows automatically roll up again

I know my crewcab has a heck of a time closing the front doors. I don't have the later vented doors on yet. But I too was thinking about cab vents behind the seat. I have hear that guys who run big stereos have to vent their compartments...so maybe another avenue to look for vents?

I simply open the window, close the door, and roll the window back up. I guess I'm just old fashioned....

I have been trying to find these vents online with not very good luck. Any idea on what the real name is on them? I cant imagine they would be too hard to install. Im sure i can go too the junkyard and get some but would rather have new.

Well I decided to do a little searching for you. Can't seem to find any "new" units. I found that "Truck cabin vents" seem to offer up the most hits pertaining to these. But I have searched all kinds of different words, and combinations to find these units new.

Closest I found to new would be door jam vents...but they are not that big.

Think the best way to get what you want is to head to the wreckers.

Thanks for the help, i will do some searching at a junk yard and see what i can find. I think it would be a good way to go if not too complicated to put in. I think it will look better on the door panels if i just make a panel to cover the whole bottom section

Check out Toyota pickups. They have some really nice units in them.
