I'm just wondering how many guys in here use their trucks to do commercial hauling, talking 20'+ trailers. Its something that I've been dreaming of getting into.

I make lots of money with my truck.

I go to the local bars at night, meet older women over the age of 80, that need a little lovin, from a middle aged stud, such as myself. I charge them for the pleasure of buying me a few drinks and then helping them get in the passenger seat of my dodge, then I jump over curbs, through culverts, over speed bumps, and a few old people neighbors (that they don't like). that I run over from time to time.

They get a good thrill out of it by having their heart beats raised during the whole ordeal.

I make about $15 a night, but at least I have fun....

Usually It's the new stuff I see doing large scale couriering of say steel or product on a 5th wheel. Had a ppump dodge picking up a pallet from our shop the other day, certainly looks like the guy had made his money with that truck.

I use mine to haul pieces and equipment to jobs, so it makes me some money.

I use mine to haul stuff with. I was hauling steel and wood last year. With the price of metal I was loading my truck up and made large amount of cash.

I think the big weak link in these trucks is the trans regardless of auto or stick. You have the same truck as me and after the truck you can only pull about 7-8,000lbs safely and consistently in stock form. Depending on the trailer that doesn't leave much for a load. The 25' Gooseneck I dragged to Oklahoma was 5,500 on its own behind my auto truck I was "over loaded" with just it. Realistically on the way home it was grossing 21,000 and the chassis handled it fine with the air bags in the rear. That said I will never make a trip like that without doing something different with the trans it was a nerve racking trip that I couldn't get over 60MPH, it sucked.

There's a way to correct this.

Apparently in about a million 16 passenger busses, Allison transmissions were mated up to a cummins ? Not sure, but the transmission is toted to be "indestructible". I was told to "upgrade" my truck to this transmission to prevent breakdowns when plowing.

Anyone know more about this transmission ?

I was using mine a few times a week hauling various trucks & equipment for different people until I got my F-350 7.3idi. I would gross any where from 11k to 30k+. It did as well as a newer truck with less expense. I quit using it because to me its too nice to tear up. The only hauling related problems I had was a melted headlight switch and a few u-joints. I noticed once I started pulling really heavy trailers the body started to fall apart so I bought the ford. The 7.3 is slow but it does alright.

If its an Allison 545 your talking about, they aren't the best. At the shop I worked at we would always have a bus in there with a transmission issue. It didn't matter what engine was in front of it but none of them ever had over 185hp because they were in buses. The common issues were sticking governors, tq converters, leaking hoses, total failure in most cases. Another strike is they are non overdrive/ non lock up. The newer electronic 5 and 6 speeds are great. They have lock up and a tall over drive. The only thing we ever did to them was an occasional sensor.

an allison 1000 comes behind the duramaxes and when we did one at the shop it was built to be idiotproof. to do them the right way though you will literally pay an arm and a leg, especially if you take it to a trans shop and have them build it up, then you have to buy a standalone harness for the trans and the adapter and starter and blah blah blah you get the idea.

Allison 545's have no overdrive most of the time and non lock converters, I believe 1stgen545 on here used to have one in his truck and even with a totally custom low stall converter he still took it all out and put a 5 speed in. i don't think he was happy with it

a 727 would be much simpler to swap in instead of that allison, if i had to put an allison in, which i never will, it would be the six speed allison 1000. those are niiiceeeeee
