Do I need to index the harmonic balancer?

My dad and I killed his KDP last weekend. (It hadn't budged a bit.) Dad is reassembling and didn't mark how the harmonic balancer came off. Does it matter how it goes back on? My opinion was that it didn't since there's no keyway.

Gosh, I hope not.

I've always just bolted the balancer back up.

Well that's what I thought. Just wanted to check. There is a mention in the FSM about marking it's location when you take it off. But I could think of no good reason it has to go back on that way unless the crankshaft is balanced with the balancer in place.
