Do I have the 3200 rpm spring?

I don't know much of the history of the truck, but I know the pump was rebuilt sometime before I got it.

I think I have it.. just did some pen and paper and came up with this:

I can go 45mph in third and 95 in 5th.
I have 4.10 gears
Third gear ratio is 1.6
I have tires with a diameter of about 31.5 inches.

45mph = rear tires spinning at 47,520 inches/minute, which means tires are moving at 480 RPM.

480*4.1*1.6 = 3149 RPM engine speed.
95mph comes out to above 3200 RPM though.. and the whole truck is making crazy noises.. only did that once

Did I do this right?

If I do have the higher governor spring, I almost regret it.. I really wish I could have driven it before to know what an upgrade it is.

Also, I need to get a tach.. can't constantly do this math in my head!

IIRC, If you google fo rit, there are a couple websites that willdo that math for you. figure your gear ratio, tire size and speed and give you engine rpms..

The stock governor spring will let the engine do 3400 RPM or so if the high idle screw is backed out, it just doesn't pull hard above 2600 RPM. If you had the 3200 RPM spring the top end would be over 100. It fuels to 3200 RPM and the engine can run well over 4k with no load.

Hmm i was confused. I thought the stock spring was governed absolutely to 2600. Yeah, I feel like I don't have it then. It doesn't pull very hard between 35-45, and the sound is different.. (defueling I guess)

Sorry all, I come from the world of 8000 rpm toyota turbos, and this is my first diesel, as well as first larger truck. I'm still learning.

Thanks!

So its definitely worth it to put in the spring?

Ave, I had the Getrag with 4.10's and put in a 3200rpm spring. In 5th before all I could hit was between 75-85. After it was 90-95 but that was also with the VSS direct connect, no gear reducer as it shredded itself. So at 60 I was really doing 63mph. Someon do the math please, I am tired.

I got 3.54's in my 91" and my tires measure out to 33", I've had the speedo corrected so it's accurate. Before the spring I could almost see 95mph in fifth on flat land, after the spring it'll break 100mph pretty easy and I'm sure there is a lot more left but I don't think my factory lift pump is up the high rpm fuel demand. The fuel spring is the best $16 I've ever spent, it was like turning the full power screw up all over again.

Yes, the 3200 RPM spring is the best $15 you can spend on a 1st gen.

Our governor does not give that kind of precise speed regulation. When you get the pump top off you will think Bosch stole the governor design from Briggs & Stratton.

I really would like to do this, but I wanted to figure out if I already had it before tearing my pump apart and screwing something up

Gosh I really wish I knew more about these things.. I do academically, I feel like, from reading so much on here, but I lack the seat-of-the-pants knowledge.

Seems like I might have it though, just need more fuel to hit the higher speed? I really have no idea, rebuke me if you must

I will get a tach soon when money allows.
