Divorced transfer case practicality
Divorced transfer case practicality
This isn’t really first gen related but I know some of you have experience with the older Dodges with divorced cases. I’m contemplating a repower with a first gen motor and a trans that I can’t find a passenger drop married transfer case for. For an everyday driver/truck that will tow is a divorced case asking for trouble? I know I’m going to have to build a crossmember and brace it so it can’t rock back and forth, and there’ll be one more driveshaft spinning all the time...
IMHO, it's all in the execution of the install.
Some newer trucks had divorced cases... the Chevy Kodiak MDT comes to mind.
Do note that the tcase and midship fuel tank may be completing for space.

I've been running a divorced 205 behind a G360 in my '74 W200 for about 25k miles. I don't tow heavy with that truck, but I do take it on long road trips and I have had no issues.
As u2slow said, its all about the install. U-joint angles are crucial.
I upgraded the small shaft between the transmission and transfer case to 1410 series u-joints.
The brace is nice for 4wd.
Good luck. Keep us posted.
