Disk backplate or not?

My old Workhorse came with a plate in back of one rotor, none on the other. There's been no difference in brake component life or performance (near as I can tell). Since I'm in there now I'm tempted to trash the one backplate, or possibly buy one for the other side if someone can convince me that I should. One thing is that without the plate it's easier to clean up after brake work, and to check the rotor surfaces periodically. Also I need to be careful greasing the lower joint to prevent any surplus grease getting on the rotor, but that's not too tough, .... any thoughts? .....
