Low supply=high demand=high price. The oil cartels in the middle east control supply and demand, while we in north america don't really tap our supply. I guess we'll have the last laugh. The current political climate has alot to do with how high gas prices are allowed to climb . About four years ago it wasn't too bad. The oil companies would jack the price, politicians in some areas would say, no no and they would drop for a time, and then climb back up and the cycle would repeat.
In more recent times, the governments in north america, including our own in Canada have not taken such an interest in the public's wishes, and the oil prices, as well as insurance rates have climbed out of control.
Let's just say that americans aren't the only ones looking looking at the u.s. election with great interest. What happpens in America affects alot of places in the world economically. We all hope that whomever wins will act in the people's interests and not his own. We shall see.
In addition to this, has anyone noticed a drop in their gasser's mileage? The oil companies also control the refining process, and alot of vehicles seem to be getting less mileage, regardless of age and wear. Oil companies have also had to settle monitarily with owners of certain vehicle for damage to fuel senders in certain vehicles. How could this have happened if they weren't messing with the mix so to speak. Food for thought.

The smoke screw's mission in life is to provide an initial bit of preload on the AFC diaphram/cone to give you a bit of fuel so the turbo will spool a bit better. I'd be very curious how you'd get much mileage increase out of just that adjustment.
Chances are you may be driving a bit differently in concert with that and, that would make up the difference.
I would also keep in mind that the full fuel screw sends an increased amount of fuel to the entire power band.
The trick here is, the larger portion of that overall increase is sent to the low/mid range band.
If you rotate your AFC cone from lean to Max then, ease out the full fuel screw you will have a more controlled fueling increase and keep from sending too much to the low/mid range. That in turn will reduce smoke, EGT's, and improve mileage.
After that, the next step would be to decide if you are getting too much smoke at low boost.
If so, you need to raise the starwheel up. This will delay the fueling rate increase until more boost is built and that will get it burning cleaner and more efficiently.
If there is little to no smoke at low boost w/throttle then you can ease down the starwheel and let the pump send a bit more fuel at lower boost value's.
The fine tuning of smoke on the initial "launch" so to speak is done using the smoke screw. If you find that the smoke you get on crossing the intersection so to speak is too heavy, use the smoke screw to tweak that.
Give that a wack and see how you make out....
