de-wiring the truck
de-wiring the truck
alright kids....here's the deal
i am at my wits end with the truck, and its wiring.
Background:
-'92 4x4 frame and motor, early '91 cab, fenders, front clip; bed will be a service body.
-truck is now a 5spd.
-the truck itself used to be a town plow truck, it was rough, hence the body swap.
-I did the auto to 5spd swap over the winter...truck is up, running and driving,
-I then did the cab swap; truck would start and run by the key, but i could not get any other electrical functions to work correctly (lights, blower motor, wipers), i got the directionals and 4ways to work properly.
-alternator is now externally regulated, functions propetly
-grid heaters and inoperative, and i dont care if they work or not
-i have mechanical oil pressure, coolant temp, volt gauge, boost gauge, hour meter, and fuel gauge installed; all work
-right now, i have two complete harnesses in the truck, and i dont know what to do
Here's what i want to do:
get rid of all the wiring in the truck that is not needed. i can get lights to work with switches, i have a nice 6-switch panel that fits perfectly where the headlamp switch would be(high/low beams, running lights, plow frame high/low beams etc). as of right now i dont care if anything else works.
Question: What do i need to do to just make the truck start and run? I like the idea of a push button start, and a pull cable shut down, both of which i would like to use. My Peterbilt at work has just a "power on" switch and a push button start, and i like it.
So basically, as simply as anyone can answer it, what do i need to do to have a switch that turns power on (i really only need power on to excite the alternator, and run the fuel gauge and hour meter, right?) and to make it so i can push a button to spin the starter and the truck starts. Like i said, a pull cable will shut the truck off, and right now ALL i want the truck to do is start and run.
Anyone who can answer and point me in the right direction, your help is much appreciated, and please be as specific as possible, as i am trying to learn some.

i hooked a push button start in my rig and thats the best thing i have done for starting it. never a problem. run the large battery cable wire to the battery and then the solanoid wire just run to the push button switch in the cab and then to the battery negative side. the battery switch i havent done that before but im sure someone can give you some advice
