Dana70 woes
Hello all, I lost a rear drivers side wheel and axle and it tore up the housing where the big nut goes on, (gear ratio 307) which appears to be rare and just plain can't find another one to replace it and the only thing I can think of to do is have the housing takin off a 85 dually (gear ratio 456) that I found and have the axle housing takin off from the punkin and put on mine does anyone know if this will work? THANX

It's done all the time. Not necessarily for the reason you are doing it but I have done it to narrow D60's for the front and rear of Jeeps. It has also been done to change offset on the front Dana's. You have to cut the plug welds out of the housing remove the tube and replace with a new/different tube (not as simple/easy as written but very do-able) Also it is best if a housing jig is used to ensure that the tube stays inline with the carier saddles and the other tube. The only other way you are going to save that housing is to cut the damaged spindle off just behind the backing plate flange and weld a new one on. adain a jig should be used. Done right it shoud be strong enough to hold up

Not sure where you are, but if you look in a trucking trade journal you will find companies that can build-up and re-turn spindles on the truck. I thik it is somewhat pricey (around $800) but it works, and you don't have to take the truck apart, etc.

I didn't think there was anything special about the rear D70 about needing 3.07 gears. Wouldn't any D70 housing take the 3.07 gear set, or at least if you use the 3.07 carrier?

I know other axles just use a different carrier for different gear ratios.
I would suspect that the housing is the same, the carrier would have a different offset for the ring gear.

I know that the front D60 on the 91.5-93 is different center housing than other D60's to accomodate the 3.07 gears but I didn't think there was anything different about the rear.
