Dana 60 front, question.

Hi, when did Dodge make the switch from external lockouts to internal lockouts? I thought it was 91 but I just bought a 1990 with internal. Thanks

Is the one with out manual locking hubs a 1/2 ton they had them starting in the late 70's or early 80's. If it is a 3/4 or one ton it should have manual locking hubs through 93.

Wait I think even the gas 3/4 tons didns have manual hubs. I have a dana 44 from a 93 3/4 ton 4x4 and it doesn't have manual hubs so maybe it was just the diesel 3/4 tons. My buddy has a 85 gas 1 ton and it has manual hubs on it.

Guys when I say external and internal I think you are misunderstanding. My 92 has internal lockouts. All the older Dodges (all the way up to 89) used an external lockout that looked like a big **** on the hub.

Bgilbert, I think your correct in that they switched in 89.
Simplysmn, the older Dodges (70's,80's) you had to pay extra for lockouts. Even on the heavy duties. I have an older D60 with plates on it. It was on a 1977 W300 dump truck. But if you meant all our first gens came with lockouts then you are correct.

no advertising here, just a reference to show onemoparnut the difference. i believe the one on the right is internal and the one on the left external.

Might want to double check if it is a 60 or 61.

Our '89 had a 3.54 geared dana 61 with the external lockouts.

The Dana 60Fs w/ the splined hub plates were used on the 75-79 Full time 4x4 setups with the NP203 transfer case. The plates were necessary to function with the full time setup.

The part-time 4x4 Dana 60s used the more common style lockouts...either internal or external.

Mike I dont think the dump truck was a full timer. I thought it had a 205 under it. I could be mistaken though. Thanks for the clearification. Robert
