D70 "walking" carrier bearing
D70 "walking" carrier bearing
Hi, I pulled the rear cover from my 93 4X4. All the gears, posi ramps and pins look good. I do have a passenger side carrier bearing that is walking, I would imagine the bearing is shot and I have the ability to replace the inner and outer bearings race. Is there a fix for this? I could tightened up the tolerances by replacing the cap and using a punch to tightened up the housing. Has anyone tried to make a girdle or a saddle type of thing for this condition? I would imagine I could even make a shim to fit between the housing and cap that would be held in place by the tabs on the cap? I would hate to scrap a complete housing, any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks, Artie
when dana's spin the carrier bearing race it messes up the bore of the cap plus the side of the axle tube where the race would get the side preload from there is a tool that refaces the side then extra shim is added to make up for the trued up sides with the cap it could be filed lightly or sanded as long as the bore has no lip or bad ware ffrom the race turning
Thanks for the info, the truck hasn't been raced or abused, maybe neglected. So the outer race of the carrier bearings get the side to side end play by the axel's tube? I believe the passengers bearing is the coast side, not the thrust? It has an auto trans. Would I would want to rebuild the limited slip while the carrier was out to press on both bearings? What else should I look at to be sure rear axel is worth saving? The spider shafts, gears, and ramps on the carrier itself look good, as well as ring & pinion. Leaking wheel and input seal, also. I really appreciate the help, Artie
So, would approx. .125 (1/8" In.) shim be somewhat in the repairable range of the axel tube? The carrier's cap doesn't hold the outer race to the pre-load, the tube does? How much pinion movement is servicable? I have some, not much in and out and very little up and down? Thanks for your help, Artie
You have to get your housing machined by a shop that has the tool/knowhow to do it. Chances are, they have done more than one and know how much to take off. I believe on mine they used oversized races and machined the hole bigger.
As far as rebuilding the limited slip, I would. May as well do it right. Even just restack the clutches if they are holding... Check the spider gears and stuff.
My carrier bearings were spinning in the housing too... Its a common problem with the 70's from what i've heard.
