D70 Mag-hytec question
D70 Mag-hytec question
I just installed a mag-hytec cover on my Dually D70 rear. It seems to me that filling it to the 6qrts that they claim it will hold now is not doable to the fill lines on the dipstick. I got about 5 1/4 or so in and its already past the top fill line on the dipstick. I did drive the truck around 3 miles or so and it stayed the same on the dipstick.Help me out guys who have installed this diff cover. How many did you put in and do you go off of the fill line on the dipstick? Thanks, Robert
Can't help ya on the fluid question... I've put a few on and just went by the fill line.. Didn't even see what the capacity was and they have been fine for the past few years..
Do you happen to have the part# on that cover.. Id like to get one for mine

Its simply a D70. Thats the part #. They claim though that it will take 6 qrts to fill though! Anybody else put one on?
A limited slip differential (Posi
) will take up more volume than an open differential. Or, a Limited slip will take less fluid to fill than an open differential. and 3/4 of a quart sound about right. mine was about 5.75quarts. However, with 3.07s the housing is a bit larger. Fill it to the line and forget it. and it WILL drop the temp a bit!

I try to keep my rear diff at the top line on the dip stick which is about 5.5 qts. I have had my Mag Hytec diff cover on for 7 or 8 years and have noticed something different but nice. Before I put it on a had axle seal failure about every 25 to 30 thousand miles. After the Mag Hytec cover went on I have not had a seal failure - the old girl went over 70K at which time I had the rear brakes done. I know the rear diff is well above the factory and recomended fill level. It would appear as if those seals are now getting enough lubricant to keep them from failing.

IIRC, mine took about 4 and a half quarts to bring the level just above the bottom of the axle tubes. It reads well over the marks on the stick at that rate, but that's because it is tilted back/up in a brokeback driveline/pinion setup.
It's all relative. The thing to remember is it'll be be spitting the excess into the brakes if you get it overfilled.

Where is the best and cheapest place to buy one of the Mag-Hytec differential covers? And so it still roughly adds about 1-2 quarts of fluid gain over the stock setup? I do like the idea that the wheel bearings will be seeing more fluid outward toward the wheels and prolonging any problems there. Sounds like a good, intelligent modification to do if I don't want to happen to install a whole Dana 80 axle in the rear.
