cruise control problems

Hello, I finally got the truck out on the highway and tried the cruise control out. Well it works but you have to keep pressing the set button and finally it will kick in. When it does it works great. I checked the lines going to the cruise and brake booster and they look good. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what was your fix. I promised myself everything on this truck was going to work great. So now I have to figure out why it doesnt take right off when the set button is pressed. Any ideas? THANKS

I would say maybe the "clock spring" in the steering column. Its the little device that allows the steering wheel to turn while still maintaining contact with the switches. They are known to go out but I don't know if this how they start going out or anything. It could also be as simple as the contacts in the switch need cleaned.

Might want to ck the amount of vacume the pump is putting out. If your on the hiway and the cruise is set/working does the "accel" button raise the MPH?
