cruise control doesnt work
cruise control doesnt work
I have just purchased a 92 with the getrag 5 speed and the cummins ,the cruise control doesn't work ,I have no Idea where to start other than check the fuse ,and the brake switch which I have done ,does anyone have a schematic or a trouble shooting chart ???
There is a part in your steering column known as the clockspring.
The clockspring is the rotateable electrical connection between the buttons on your steering wheel and the column.
When this part fails you will loose either the horn or the cruise control or both.
Sometimes these things fall apart internally, you will hear plastic crunching
sounds when turning the wheel.

With the engine idling, pull the vacuum hose off the cruise servo and make sure you have good vacuum there.
It's nice to have access to a scanner, so you can see that the pcm is receiving the signals from the switches.

The only way I can think of would be to pull the steering wheel, remove the clockspring and check for continuity between the input and output connectors with a continuity or ohm meter.
Removing and replacing a clockspring isn't difficult, the hardest part is getting the steering wheel removed if you don't have a puller.I made a puller from
a piece of steel bar.

however, being lazy I do things in keeping with the "whats easiest first" philosophy...
The vacum at teh servo is esiest to test, takes just a few minutes..
Then switches, takes a few minutes with the voltmeter..
then clockspring , which is hardest to get at and such...
Doesnt make it easier, adn if the clock spring is bad, teh switches can test bad...
but I alwasy go at things backwards, makes life interesting...
