Question Crank Position Sensor Wires...

Belt tensioners shred belts...belts shred wires...wires are important.

My Crankshaft Position Sensor wires have been torn up, and I've got the soldering iron ready to stick em back together, but have a problem.

The thing is..they aren't color-coded. It's 3 wires stuck together, they're all silver.

Of course the middle wire would be correct, but how do I figure out where the other 2 go? Is there a right way? Or does it not matter?

Anyone got a manual (wannadiesel?) that can see if those wires have to go a certain way?

I need to get this fixed ASAP, I've got a big trip planned for this coming weekend

Thanks!

Looking at a 93 FSM.

I see the crank position sensor having 3 connections in a pyramid type orientation. With the index notch at the top, I see from left bottom GY/BK (also goes to PCM) center top TN/YL (also goes to vehicle speed sensor) right bottom BK/LB (goes lots of places).

I know that doesn't help too much since you don't know whether this looks to the front or the rear, and neither do I, so I'm still looking to find out.

I scanned the FSM page, but I'm not sure it helps any, but that's all I have. I can't post attachments, so if you PM me, I'll email you the scan.

I think one of the outside wires has a tracer on it...need to look closer. If so, it'll only go one way

that scan from theFSM would be great....
my e-mail addy is hybridhatch96@aol.com

thanks

Well it's fixed.

I removed the Crankshaft Position Sensor, and the other half of the pigtail.

After careful inspection & cleaning the wires, I found a white tracer on the middle wire. Well, obviously he middle wire goes to the middle wire, but my concern was where the other 2 outer wires went. Turns out, the middle wire has a tracer on 1 side only...so it only goes one way. I soldered the wires together & heat shrinked them, tucked everything back up in there nice & tight.

Everything seems good now.

JohnH, thanks for the scanned pics of the FSM!

Its a good idea to mount an external voltage regulator somewhere on the firewall so if you do ruin the crank sensor, the alternator will still charge. The crank sensor actually controls the signal to the alternator relay to show that the engine is turning. No crank sensor, no charge. You can find the instructions in the tech facts. It has saved me a time or two.
