crank position sensor

posted this in help earlier today only got one bite. took my truck out today around town for about 1 hr. anyway when i started it it ran 950rpms a little above normal, also it didnt seem to have the power to take off in 2nd gear had to use 1 st to keep from riding the clutch. guy said it might be crank sensor, what i want to know is where is the sensor, how do i check it, and if it fails will i be stranded where it quits? thanks for any help.

Crank sensor is between the starter and the block, have to take the starter out to get to it. It almost touches the dip stick tube. Have not had one go bad so do not know how it would react.

When Mine whent, the tach was erratic, sometimes staying a 0.
The temp guage was moving, and the truck would stumble like you switched the key off for a second. Can't remember the code, but it pointed to the computer no being able to tell the injection pump want to do. Here's link that has some pics
