Clutch master cylinder pushrod removal?

How do you get the dang push rod out of the clutch master cylinder?!?

I need to build an adjustable replacement and rebuild the clutch pedal pin on my truck. The stock stuff is just totally wasted....

The FSM says that the master cylinder must be rotated 45 degrees ccw to remove it from the vehicle, but I believe that you want to remove the rod from the cylinder, right? The FSM says nothing about removing the rod from the cylinder. It may have an internal clip, or something, but I don't know. I have a replacement master cylinder, I will check to see if it comes with rod attached...Mark

I just looked at the new one and it comes with the rod attached, so my guess would be that it is an integral part of the MC, not designed to come off. Of course, that doesn't mean that it cannot be modified ...Mark

Thank you so much for looking!

I had a bad feeling that was the case.

I'm going to have to do something. I might just cut off the factory one and build an adjustable add on that slips over the stock part......

MMMmmmmm....

I'm gonna have to do both I think. The pin on the pedal is really worn out also. How hard is it to get the pedal out? If I can get it out I can weld up the groove in the pin....

If its a total pain to get the pin out, maybe I can just make a sleeve to go over the existing pin and epoxy it in place....

Thanks again for the help!

I believe that the hardest part of removing the pedal is being a contortionist working around the steering wheel and seat. It might be worth removing said items, but that depends on your contortioning skills ...Mark

There is a metal clip that holds the push rod into the MC. It is really stiff and I have not been able to remove one without breaking something. I am sure there is a special tool out there somewhere for it. It is kind of like the quick connect fuel fittings, but stiffer and down inside the MC piston.

I have welded a 3/8" threaded rod on to the the push rod and used a female heim. No problems yet. The stock rod is just under 3/8" O.D. IIRC.

I make a bushing and add a 3/8" grade 8 bolt for a pin on the clutch pedal as well. The first one I did, I did it all with the pedal still in the truck, it's a pain. Then I found out you can pull one little bolt and slide the shaft back and the clutch pedal drops right out.

LIGHTLY clamp the master cylinder in a vise.
Take a long hardened pick and reach in and fold one of the tabs back, then use a twisting, pulling motion on the rod and it'll pop out.

All it takes is getting the end to go past ONE of the tabs.

Done several to make the 2nd gen master work on a 1st gen before.

Mark.
