Choice of 1 Mod - 3k GSK or 14cm/16cm Housing???

Which would you choose if you could only get one and use your truck mostly just for towing a medium load (5-6k)?

Also, is there any danger to using a 14cm non-WG housing with my current setup? I don't want to have to worry about damaging something because the housing is non-WG'ed, so if that's the case I'll just go with the 16cm and be disappointed.

Although I don't have it yet, everyone that does says the governor spring is the most bang for the buck. Like driving a whole different engine.

I'd say for what you're doing, get a 3200 RPM spring ($20 or so) and find a used 12cm wastegated housing (I got one for $55). That way you can control boost, have great spoolup, and get the extra RPM's of the 3200 spring. Don't worry about the install of a WG housing because of moving the downpipe - it is simple once you get in there. You will love the 12cm wastegated housing. I have a 3200 spring and 12cm housing and it has made the truck WAY more fun to drive.

I've also got this same impression when searching and reading older posts. I guess I just don't understand how the spring works because everyone says our engines die off at higher RPM's and I thought the 3kGSN just raised our defuel/RPM limit? So how does it make such a big difference if it only raises the RPM's, at a point where there is already little or no power?

Where can you get the springs for $20? I checked a few of the online dealers that advertise here and I thought they were like $125.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, where did you find a 12cm WG housing for only $55? Everything with a WG I've seen is in the $400 range.

I think you were looking at a GSK for a 2nd gen 12V with the P7100 pump. The spring for our VE pump is a Bosch number at the top of this page: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
You can get the spring from any Bosch pump shop.

Here are some excellent instructions to install it: http://dens-site.net/Dodge_CTD/Governor_Spring/

I put a wanted ad in the classifieds for a used 12cm housing and got one that way. Make sure it is a housing from a 12 valve.

Wrong kit. The second gen kit is the expensive one, ours is not a gov spring kit, its just a 12-15 dollar spring, thats all.

That was the biggest single mod that will make a stock truck act like a real truck in my opinion. Other than that, as mentioned unless you plan some bigger mods, a 12 cm W/g housing/turbo combo gives great low rpm boost, but most "pawn" them away because the choke when you get bigger injectors, etc.

Wow, thanks for the input guys. Guess it's a no-brainer then.

Next question is, how do I find a Bosch dealer in my area? I tried their website but the dealer locater couldn't find anyone in my area (Salt Lake City), which I find hard to believe.

I think most people find it the easiest to give the guys at PDR (Piers Diesel Research) a jingle and have them send you one.

I voted for the spring. The 18 is really a fine housing, especially for an automatic.

For only $20 how can you not!

I am really confused as to how the spring makes such a difference though. Everyone swears by them, but nobody has explained exactly why they make such a big difference. I must not understand exactly how it all works.

because the factory spring defuels at 2200+- and the truck falls flat and wont pull past 27-28 hundred the 3200 spring fuels all the way up and gives you 500+ rpm ...feels more like a gasser with gobbs of TQ
