CAT fuel filter

Has anyone seen an adapter to mount a CAT 1R-750 filter on our 1st gens? I see them for the newer trucks. I understand that the cat filter is a 98 percent 2 micron and 4 micron absolute. Much better than the factory filter. I don't really want to do a remote mount or spend hundreds of dollars on some kind of fancy after market system only to spend even more on replacement filters for it. I have a fairly well equipped shop in my man cave that I am sure that I can make whatever adapter is needed if something is not available. What is everybody's thoughts? Anybody ever try and do something like this?

So I am comparing filter sizes and found that the Cat 750 filter is huge compared to our stock one. But the gasket is almost the same size. The gasket on top is one off the factory filter, probably 1/32 inch difference. I will have to check into it more to see if that enormous CAT filter will even fit in the space of the factory one.

A relocation kit to the firewall will most likely be necessary, as I can barely get my oil filter wrench between the filter and the block noise block material, and it's a stock sized filter but just longer.

I am going to make a thread adapter to see if it will fit in the factory location. 16x1.5 inside and 1 inch 14 thread outside. I will know by this afternoon if it will work but that size difference does make me wonder...

This is the prototype. I think a seal around the center to prevent bypass contamination through the threads is in order, similar to what the factory uses.

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Two important questions that need honest answers.

1. what did the new filter cause regarding fuel pressure readings ?
2.. What did you have to disassemble to get that monster in there ?

Thanks !

Question 1 - I do have a piston lift pump that puts out 12-14 psi and it has made no difference in pressure. I do wonder ho many miles it will go. much finer filtering will plug quicker but it also has much more filter area.
Question 2 - It actually went in ok, well barely ok. I doubt that I could fit much more than a piece of paper between the filter and the insulating material on the engine but the tightest part was threading it on. At the bottom of the filter the engine comes slightly out and almost pushes on the bottom of the filter trying to make you cross thread it, but as long as you pay attention and make sure you have it straight it goes on ok. I had my doubts about it fitting too but didn't want to clutter things up with a remote filter so I had to try.

Very slick install.

On the CAT machines we have at work, that's the final filter. All fuel runs through a primary water separator or a centrifuge first. I still prefer a two stage setup on my truck. Keeps the worst crap, and water, out of the lift pump.

Very cool! And great turn around time. Did you have the injection pump out too?

Yes the injection pump was out, for other repairs. A couple of notes on the filter, I am not sure that you could use a strap type wrench to loosen the filter, it might not fit. I use the plier type. Also the fuel coming out of the factory fuel heater comes out around the filter nipple. The new adapter is so much larger that it almost closed that off. Then the seal finished pinching that off, so I drilled several small holes as seen in the picture. If the heater was eliminated it would eliminate that problem and help with the clearance at the bottom of the filter while threading it on. But as is it is not a problem putting a new filter on, You just have to be careful. The unthreaded portion of the adapter is just to help align the filter onto the threads and works well.
