Calling all tach installers!

Hi,
I have been thinking about putting a tach in my 92'. At first i wanted a isspro 2 1/16 tach to go on my steering column but funds are too tight! I have done some research and came up with this tach http://surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UI...541-K&catname=
Should i hook it up to the factory plug under the dash and see if it works, or hook it up to the alternator via the w wire off the stator? i guess my question is Im just looking for advice and what you guys have had in past experiences. Thanks for all the help

I bought the Isspro gauge and connector for the factory harness. I could not get it to work so I sent the harness back and bought one of the Isspro sending units where you glue the magnets to the harmonic balancer and mount another pick up unit. I had to fab up a mount for the pick up (just some 10 gauge steel bent up with a couple of holes drilled) as the mount they sent would not work right, I forget why. Also, I had to use crazy glue to put the magnets on as the little tube of glue that came with the magnets had gone rubbery.

I was a little peeved at the time, but I really like the Isspro tach now.

JP.

I would bet you'll need to order a sender for it from VDO. That's not an alternator tach, it uses a sender similar to our crank sensor. Wouldn't hurt anything to try it on the factory plug, though. It's 2 pulses/rev, if the tach sees the signal it should work.

thanks guys for the input. I will try to find out more on that particular tach. If i had to, could a isspro crank sensor work as a sender?

I have that tach set up to run off the alt on my 91. Says my idle is right around 800. I haven't yet had a chance to check it against another tach, however, so I cannot verify it's accuracy (or lack thereof)
